  • Africa's Relationship With China Is Ancient History

    In 2002 South Africa's Parliament unveiled a digital reproduction of a map - of China, the Middle East and Africa - that some speculated could be the initial map of the African continent. The Da Ming Hun Yi Tu - the Comprehensive Map of the Great Ming Empire - was drawn up around 1389 during the Ming Dynasty, according to historian Hyunhee Park.

  • Climate change laws around the world

    There has been a 20-fold increase in the number of global climate change laws since 1997, according to the most comprehensive database of relevant policy and legislation.

    The database, produced by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the Sabin Center on Climate Change Law, includes more than 1,200 relevant policies across 164 countries, which account for 95% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

This week, he was named the 2017 recipient of the World Food Prize, a prestigious honor that includes a $250,000 award.     Since gaining independence from France in 1960, Chad, a landlocked country in central Africa, has been plagued by instability and conflict arising from tensions between different religious and ethnic factions.

    Political Context

    President Idriss Deby Itno and his party, the Patriotic Salvation Movement, have dominated Chadian politics since ascending to power in 1990. Deby won the 1996 elections—the initial multi-party elections held in Chad—inclunding the 2001, 2006, and 2011 elections. The electoral processes during these elections have, however, been controversial.

    In 2013, friendly and cooperative relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Chad continued to develop.

    The two sides maintained friendly exchanges. In March, President Idriss Deby Itno, Prime Minister Djimrangar Dadnadji Joseph and Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and International Cooperation Moussa Faki Mahamat sent letters of congratulations to President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and Foreign Minister Wang Yi respectively on their assumption of office.

    N’Djamena  is the capital and major city of Chad. In 2009, its people was recorded as 993,492. A port on the Chari River, near the confluence with the Logone River, it directly faces the Cameroonian town of Kousséri, to which the city is connected by a bridge. It is as well a special statute region, divided into 10 arrondissements. It is a regional market for livestock, salt, dates, and grains. Meat, fish and cotton processing are the chief industries, and the city continues to serve as the centre of economic activity in Chad, despite the country's violent civil conflicts.

    Idriss Deby was born in Fada, Chad, in 1952. He is the current President of Chad. Deby is has a military background and attended a military college in N'Djamena. In 1982 he was named as the commander-in-chief of the army, by the then president Hissene Habre. His relations with Habre soured in 1989 and eventually Deby led a successful rebellion in 1990. He was then officially proclaimed president in 1991, he was re-elected in 1996, 2001, 2006.
