Dakar city: A regional conference on aviation security in Africa opened on Wednesday in Dakar

A regional conference on aviation security in Africa opened on Wednesday in Dakar, Senegal, to address challenges and improve the safety of air transport in Africa.

The conference is organized by Airports Council International-Africa Region (ACI-Africa) in collaboration with the Agence des Aéroports du Sénégal (ADS) and the Senegalese government.

Chaired by the Senegalese Minister of Air Transport and Tourism, Oumar Gueye, the conference is on the theme, 'Safety intelligence against threats”.

It will afford all airports and the aviation industry to meet, discuss and review the strategies implemented by the community to address permanent threats posed by unlawful acts likely to compromise the safe and orderly development of civil aviation in Africa.

To this end, the Minister said that since the 11 September attack in the US, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its members had made significant changes in the management of the security of civil aviation to transaction with the multifaceted threats against air transport in general.

'Faced with new types of unlawful acts and new forms of threats against civil aviation, it is encouraging to note that airport managers grouped in the World Airports Council, in collaboration with operators and the aviation community, is working everyday to actively participate in improving the implementation of safety devices to create an environment conducive to an efficient operation of the air transport system,' Mr. Gueye said.

He called upon members of ACI-Africa and all the stakeholders to take one additional step in finding the best solutions to counter the constant threat that from presently on affects the economy of airport hubs in African nations.

The conference will be followed by a high-level seminar initiated by the Nations Airport Assistance Programme in developing nations to help build the capacity of stakeholders involved in the management of the civil aviation safety.

'I hope that from presently on conference, members of ACI-Africa and ACI-World will further work in the context of a fruitful inter-airport cooperation, to comply with international, regional and national standards for safer airport hubs in a bid to get the maximum benefit from all policies aimed at opening up the continent to improve connectivity and make travels between African continents additional effective and additional accessible,' the Minister said.

ACI-Africa has 59 members who manage 250 airports in 47 nations. It accounts for three % of world traffic.

Its headquarters is in Casablanca, Morocco, and it is governed by a board of 15 members inclunding the Agency for Aerial Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA).

The last ACI-Africa conference was held in October 2013 in Lomé, Togo, and it was attended by over 350 participants coming from five regions of the organization.
