A strong signal of growing business engagement with Africa by large U.S. corporations was the announcement last September by Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman of plans to invest over $1 billion in Africa over the next five years. Caterpillar is not a new-comer, having begun doing business on the continent in 1926. At last month's U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Washington, DC, David Picard, Caterpillar's regional manager for Africa and the Middle East, described some of the steps that have been taken since last year's announcement. He as well talked about the challenges and opportunities he sees, inclunding Nigeria, where the company has operated since 1948. He was interviewed by AllAfrica's Noluthando Crockett-Ntonga and Ladi Olorunyomi from Premium Times in Nigeria. The interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Oil and gas major BP said it had mothballed plans to explore in Libya's Ghadames basin because of security concerns, the new in a series of companies to rethink their projects amid growing instability.
Three years of turmoil since the Arab Spring and tough arrangement terms have prompted oil firms to reassess their role in Libya, and several have said they would postpone their plans or scrap them all.
BP's exploration and production sharing agreement with Libya covers onshore acreage in Ghadames, near the border between Libya, Algeria and Tunisia, and offshore acreage in the central Sirte basin. 'With respect to the onshore exploration drilling programme, a security review in June concluded that this could not be safely and securely delivered by BP at this time. Alternative approaches are being considered,' BP said in its annual statement.

Eni has confirmed that Mellitah Oil & Gas, the Joint Venture operating company (NOC 50%, Eni 50%) in Libya, has restarted today gas production from the offshore platform of Sabratha.
Production will start at 4-5 Million cubic meters per day and will gradually increase to reach 11-13 Mcmd during the month of November, during which time all 15 wells on the platform will be progressively reopened. Additional production will as well be added at the same time as the subsea wells are put on stream in 2012.
The gas volumes will be processed at the Mellitah treatment plant complex and again shipped to Italy via the Greenstream pipeline, which was re-opened on October 13th, 2011.

The Mellitah gas facilities co-operated by Eni are still up and running despite an ongoing turmoil by a group of armed men.
About thirty men from the Amazigh community in Zuwara began protesting ten days ago at the facilities located in the western part of the country. They are threatening to block Greenstream gas pipeline - which conveys methane to Gela - unless the General National Congress agress to their demands, inclunding the recognition of cultural differences and consensus vote for minority groups. The negotiations are being held without incident.
