  • Gas Exporting Countries' summit due in Iran

    IRAN, 2014/12/31 Iran will host the third conference of the Gas Exporting Nations Forum (GECF) , which is scheduled for autumn 2015, Mohammad Hossein Adeli, secretary general of the GECF said. Heads of 18 GECF member nations will attend the summit to discuss various issues inclunding the world gas market situation, Adeli said, the official IRNA news agency reported Dec. 30. The decision was made during the 16th ministerial conference of the GECF in the Qatari capital city of Doha in mid-December.

    AFRICA, 2014/12/30 The self-declared national of Somaliland has ambitious plans to regulate its nascent oil sector. However, it is a step that could heighten tensions throughout the Somali-speaking region. Like other East African states such as Tanzania and Kenya with lucrative new oil discoveries, Somaliland is developing resources laws in preparation to reap the benefits of expected - although as from presently on unconfirmed - petroleum deposits. But analysts warn that access to oil could bring the question of autonomy from the internationally recognised national of Somalia to a chief. Though technically still part of Somalia, Somaliland has existed as an unofficial national since unilaterally declaring independence in 1991.
  • Diamond: Belgium to train Ivorian experts on surveillance of diamond exports

    BELGIUM, 2014/12/18 Three Ivorian diamond experts will be trained by the Anvers World Diamond Center (AWDC) for the surveillance of diamond exports from Côte d'Ivoire in a bid to enable the country to export the precious metal legally on the international market, official sources said on Tuesday. Mrs Margeaux Donker, AWDC spokesperson, told the press that since 2003, the UN had placed Côte d'Ivoire on the black inventory of nations banned from exporting diamonds, because at that time, Ivorian rebel groups exported the precious stones to purchase armament, an illegal trade system called 'blood diamond'.

    ANGOLA, 2014/12/11 At least two hundred hectares of the perimeter corresponding to next industrial center in the municipality of Lucala, Kwanza Norte province, were officially handed over to the provincial government, Tuesday, next being cleared off landmines. The demining operation, conducted by demining brigade assigned to the north military region of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), lasted nine months and allowed the decommissioning of four anti-tank mines, 124 unexploded ordnances, 110 various ammunition and eight thousand different metals.
  • Signing of MoU for the Setting Up of Oil Storage Terminals in Mauritius

    INDIA, 2014/12/06 A Memorandum of Considerate (MoU) was signed by the National Trading Corporation, the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd on November 27 in Port Louis regarding participation in the setting up of oil storage terminals in Mauritius. The MoU was signed in the presence of the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mr Cader Sayed-Hossen and the High Commissioner of India in Mauritius, Mr. Anup Kumar Mudgal.
  • Auroch Minerals Defines Gold Deposit Mozambique

    AUSTRALIA, 2014/12/06 Australian mining company Auroch Minerals has announced that its equitable Bride deposit in the central province of Manica holds a million ounces of gold. Using the Australian code for reporting mineral resources, JORC, the company stated that the deposit has 923,200 ounces of gold, of which 291,600 ounces are measured, 263,300 ounces indicated and 368,300 ounces inferred. On 19 November the company announced that tests have shown that it can recover between 74 and 78 % of the gold. However, the company stated that the process is from presently on to be optimised and significant improvements in the extraction rate are expected.

  • Kenya: Balala Allows Wanjala Mining Company to Transport Its 150,000 Metric Tonnes of Iron Ore Extracted At Kishushe

    KENYA, 2014/11/20 The Mining ministry has permitted Wanjala Mining Company to transport the iron ore mined in Wundanyi constituency in 2012-13. In a letter signed by Mining Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, Wanjala company was told to transport only the mined iron ore. Balala said no further extraction should be undertaken pending confirmation of boundaries and ownership by the National Land Commission. The company was suspended from mining iron ore at Kishushe following a land dispute with Kishushe Cooperative Society last year.

    TANZANIA, 2014/11/05 THE rapidly expanding economy in Tanzania is driving up energy consumption widening further the gap between energy supply and request. Due to supply constraints, power generation has been unreliable and so expensive that it inhibits development of the manufacturing sector, one of the key drivers of increase. Currently, the major consumption of energy in the country, approximately 93 %, is comprised of biomass energy resources, namely fuel from wood and charcoal, both of which come from natural forests and plantations.
