    BANGLADESH, 2013/06/24  The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has shut production at 12 risky buildings in and around Dhaka, in its initial move to tighten compliance in the apparel sector next the fatal Rana Plaza collapse on April 24. Owners of the garment factories in those buildings have been forced to shift their production units from there, said Shahidullah Azim, vice president of BGMEA. The trade body formed two panels on May 2 to check safety standards at the factories of its members. Supervised by these committees, four inspection teams have visited 110 factories.
  • Bangladesh's shipbuilding sector

    BANGLADESH, 2012/12/20   Despite having an image crisis in some areas, Bangladesh's shipbuilding sector has taken the country to a different height creating a scope to earn US$ 2 billion a year, shipbuilders say. The country has been doing excellent in the sector and can easily take the lead in the world market if the government and private sector can walk together with a pragmatic plan ensuring logistic and policy supports, they said. Association of Export Oriented Shipbuilding Industries of Bangladesh and Export Promotion Bureau jointly arranged the seminar, 'Problems in Exporting Ship from Bangladesh and their Solutions', at city's Hotel Ruposhi Bangla. Industries Minister Dilip Barua attended the inaugural session of the seminar as the chief guest while Commerce Minister GM Quader as a special guest.
