Agriculture in Malaysia

  • Concerns crude palm oil prices may keep sliding

MALAYSIA, 2013/05/13 Palm oil stocks fell by 11.4 % in April from 2.17 million tons in March, said the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) in its new monthly release. Malaysia's palm oil inventory finally eased to 1.93 million tons in April next staying above the 2-million-ton threshold for the completed 10 months, which had led to concerns that crude palm oil (CPO) prices would likely be dragged down further.
  • Malaysian Edible Oil Giant to Build Plant in Ethiopia

MALAYSIA, 2013/02/05 Malaysian palm oil manufacturer, Pacific Interlink, is set to erect the major ever edible oil refinery in Ethiopia, which will produce 300,000tn of oil at an estimated cost of 401.1 million Br. The company’s proposition was approved by the Privatisation and Public Enterprises Supervising Agency (PPESA), which initially designed and studied the viability of such a project.
  • Changing conditions for palm oil

MALAYSIA, 2010/08/25 Malaysia’s palm oil industry may be able to reap the benefits of unfavourable weather around the globe that is cutting into harvest forecasts and pushing up prices, but the sector as well has to heed some storm warnings of its own if it is to maintain production in the long term. As the second-major palm oil producer and the world’s leading exporter – accounting for an average of 40% of world output – Malaysia is well placed to continue to play a major role in the edible oil market. That said, the sector is very much subject to the whims of nature, with weather conditions at home and around the globe often having a very real impact on production and price setting.
