Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah met with visiting Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan at the Istana Nurul Iman palace here Wednesday to discuss bilateral ties and issues of common concern.

During the conference, Chang said China and Brunei have been friendly neighbors since ancient times. Since the establishment of their diplomatic relations 22 years ago, China-Brunei ties have maintained sound development momentum. He added that Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Majesty the Sultan had agreed to boost bilateral ties to the level of strategic partnership, injecting new vigor into the relationship.

In recent years, China-Brunei military ties have remained stable and fruitful results have been completed in the field of high-level visits and exchanges, personnel training and joint exercise and training.

The Chinese defense minister said China is willing to work with Brunei to carry out key consensus reached between leaders of the two nations and to deepen bilateral military relations.

Sultan Hassanal said the exchange between the two peoples enjoys a long history and the two nations have close and friendly relations. Brunei is willing to work with China to deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations to promote cooperation in various fields, particularly in defense and security.

Chang is on an official visit to Brunei to consolidate relations and cooperation with ASEAN members. He has attended ASEAN-China Defense Ministers' Consultative Conference and a series of bilateral meetings.
