Nigeria: Diezani Forfeits N7.6 Billion to Govt
NIGERIA, 2017/08/30 Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison- Madueke, who has lost billions in cash and posh property to the Federal Government in recent court orders, yesterday forfeited an extra sum of N7.6 billion to the government. The string of court ordered forfeitures began early in the year at the same time as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) applied to the courts to reclaim the money and the property on behalf of the government. Yesterday, Justice Abdulazeez Anka of the Federal High Court, Lagos ordered the final forfeiture of the N7.6 billion to EFCC at the same time as no one turned up to claim the money next a certain period. The UK's National Crime Agency has frozen properties valued at £10 million allegedly bought for the former minister of petroleum resources Diezani Alison-Madueke. Two properties located at Regents Park, along with one in Buckinghamshire, have now been frozen based on the request of Nigerian authorities. -
Information products for children to be age-rated in Uzbekistan
UZBEKISTAN, 2017/08/26 The Senate (upper home) of the Uzbek Parliament approved the law “On protecting children from data harmful to their health” on August 24, Trend’s correspondent reported from the Senate conference. Nigerian Public Officials Collect N400b Bribe in One Year
NIGERIA, 2017/08/18 In spite of Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari's much-touted anti-corruption war, public officials still collected about ₦400 billion (the equivalent of $4.6 billion in purchasing power parity) in kickbacks, a statement published on Wednesday shows. Bill Gates sees US likely to maintain aid levels for Africa
BOTSWANA, 2017/08/15 The US will probably maintain its current levels of aid to Africa despite President Donald Trump’s proposals to slash funding, according to Bill Gates, the world’s richest man. Trump said in May his government would no longer allocate funding for family planning, a move that has the potential to undermine aid programs in the poorest nations in the world. However, with Congress in control of the budget, it’s unlikely that all cuts proposed by the Trump government will go ahead next year, Gates said in an interview in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial capital. -
Tanzania: TWA Launches Portal for Girls' Economic Growth
TANZANIA, 2017/08/13 THE Tanzania Women of Succcess (TWA) yesterday launched an online portal and mobile app, 'twaa,' designed to provide mentorship and learning on the go for girls and women in Africa. Speaking at the launch, TWA President and Founder Ms Irene Kiwia said that the one-onone mentorship and knowledge sharing would facilitate the (economic) increase of girls by enhancing their skills, empowering them to perform to their highest capabilities to realise their full potential. -
South Sudanese refugees in Uganda near million mark
SOUTH SUDAN, 2017/08/03 Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, spiritual leader of the world's Anglicans, prayed on Wednesday with South Sudanese refugees in northern Uganda, home to a nearly million fugitives from a four-year civil war in the world's youngest country. Around 1.8 million people have fled South Sudan since fighting broke out in December 2013, sparking what has become the world's fastest growing refugee crisis and major cross-border exodus in Africa since the 1994 Rwandan genocide. -
Italy seizes NGO rescue boat for allegedly aiding illegal migration
ITALY, 2017/08/03 Italian coastguards seized a migrant rescue boat operated by a German aid group in the Mediterranean suspected of aiding illegal immigration from Libya, a prosecutor said on Wednesday. Video showed the Iuventa, which is run by Jugend Rettet, arriving at the island of Lampedusa surrounded by several coastguard vessels next it was stopped at sea before dawn. Protesters demand rapid inquiry into murder of Kenya election official
KENYA, 2017/08/02 Protesters marched on the offices of Kenya's election commission on Tuesday, demanding a speedy investigation of the murder of a senior official that has raised fears over the legitimacy of next week's national elections.
