A triumphant Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Likud supporters in his victory speech early Wednesday that he would aim to form "a strong, stable government" that would tackle "security and socioeconomic challenges."

Netanyahu told a jubilant crowd of Likud supporters early Wednesday morning that "against all odds, we have scored a major victory for the Likud."

"Hail, hail, Bibi," Likud adherents chanted as Netanyahu took to the podium on Wednesday.

"We have scored a major victory for the nationalist camp headed by Likud," Netanyahu said.

"I'm proud of the Israeli people because at the moment of truth they knew to differentiate between challenge and nonsense and they took up the challenge," the prime minister said.

Netanyahu said that his government will work to improve on "the majority significant things for all of us, which genuine security and socioeconomic welfare."

Next the prime minister raised eyebrows in the latter stages of the campaign by warning of a high voter turnout part Israel's Arabs, Netanyahu seemed to be extending an olive branch to Israel's minorities during his speech.

"These are significant things for each family, citizen, soldier, and all of Israel's Jewish and non-Jewish citizens," Netanyahu said. "You are all significant, and you are all significant to me."

The prime minister as well seemed to be going out of his way to mention economic matters, a departure from his public appearances during which regional threats and the security front were prominent.

"Presently we must form a strong, stable government that will know how to uphold security and socioeconomic well-being."

"We are faced with major challenges on the security and socioeconomic front," Netanyahu said. "We promised to take care of cost of living and rise of housing costs, and we will do it."

"I spoke to all of the nationalist party leaders, and I called on them to join me in forming a government without delay, because reality doesn't take a timeout."

"Citizens expect us to form a responsible leadership that will work for it, and that's what we will do."

Ancient Egyptian beer making vessels discovered in Israel
2015/03/30 Fragments of pottery used by Egyptians to make beer and dating back 5,000 years have been discovered on a building site in Tel Aviv, the Israeli Antiquities Authority said today. Excavation director Diego Barkan said 17 pits were found that had been used to store produce in the Early Bronze Age, from 3500 to 3000 BC. "Part the hundreds of pottery sherds that characterise the local culture, a number of fragments of large ceramic basins were discovered that were made in an Egyptian tradition and were used to prepare beer," he said in a statement.
Israel Chemicals offers $109 million for Allana Potash
2015/03/30 Israel Chemicals said on Friday it had made a $137 million Canadian dollars ($109.5 million) offer to buy Canada’s Allana Potash, a transaction it hopes will accelerate development of a mine in Ethiopia. ICL by presently owns 16.36% of Allana, whose Danakhil project in northeast Ethiopia could yield up to 1 million tons of muriate, the commodity form of potash, per year for 25 years. It will pay 50 Canadian cents per share for the remaining shares. The offer is a 51.5% premium to Allana’s closing price on Thursday, prior to the offer being announced. On Friday, Allana shares jumped 44% to 47.5 Canadian cents in Toronto. ICL shares edged 0.43% higher in New York for the day.
New Bio-filters Purify Surface Runoff Water for Reuse
2015/03/18 The bio-filters are designed to enable surface runoff water to be collected, purified via environmentally friendly physical and biological methods, and again channeled into the aquifers as clean water. These new bio-filters join an older one that has been operating successfully in Kfar Sava for a number of years. Two hundred million cubic meters of rainwater go to waste in Israel each year. They are washed down to the coast, where they pollute the beaches, the sea and marine life. The innovative bio-filter project is designed to allow this rainwater to be utilized in order to avoid pollution and prevent groundwater levels from dropping further.
Revised IMF forecasts signal gloom on global economic outlook
2015/01/20 Low oil prices will not provide a sufficient updraught to dispel the clouds hanging over the world economy, the International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday. In a sign of its increasing gloom about the medium term economic outlook, the IMF cut its world economic increase forecasts by 0.3 % points for both 2015 and 2016, despite believing cheaper oil represents a “shot in the arm”.
