Uruguay: Uruguay Six firms eyeing wastewater

At least international firms from the water and sanitation sector have expressed interest in the wastewater treatment component of Montes del Plata pulp mill in Uruguayan. At least international firms from the water and sanitation sector have expressed interest in the wastewater treatment component of Uruguayan forestry firm Montes del Plata's US$2.3bn pulp mill project, an official linked with the project.

The project consists of building a plant to produce 1.3Mt/y of pulp, and is to be located in Colonia department's Punta Pereira district.

The initiative, for which studies are still being carried out, will include a large industrial wastewater treatment component, the capacity of which has from presently on to be defined.

The interested companies are: Brazil's Centroprojekt; French firm Degremont; Canada's GL&V; Finnish company Kemira; and France's Veolia Water System, according to the official.

The project as well attracted attention from Brazilian sanitation firm Confab/HPD, added the official, who requested to remain anonymous.

Company representatives met with executives from the Uruguayan firm on October 25, in a business round organized in conjunction with the ministry of industries, mining and energy (MIEM).

Montes del Plata is owned by Chilean firm Arauco and Swedish-Finnish firm Stora Enso.
