In cloudy sunshine, the plane carrying the Chinese president, Initial Lady Peng Liyuan and other members of the delegation landed in the early afternoon at Palm Beach International Airport. Under the gaze of an enthused welcoming crowd, inclunding U.S. Secretary of National Rex Tillerson and his wife, Xi and Peng stepped out of the hatch and waved before they walked down the ramp hand in hand.

Dominic Barton, the world managing director of consulting firm McKinsey & Co., said in an interview that while it remains unclear what exactly the president-elect will do, he cautioned that Trump’s pledges on trade and taxation must be taken seriously in Canada. “If something does happen … again I think we’re going to have to be ready to go back to the table … you think about budgets or you think about tax cuts,” said Barton, who, as chair of the economic increase council, has the ear of Finance Minister Bill Morneau.
