  • Vulnerable Communities Reject Proposed COP21 Accord

FRANCE, 2015/12/02 Leaders from the U.S. and Canadian grassroots and indigenous communities have expressed their opposition to the proposed world climate agreement, saying that it falls far short of what is needed to avoid a world catastrophe. With additional than 100 delegates from dozens of climate impacted communities across the U.S. and Canada, the It Takes Roots delegation is calling on world leaders to emerge from COP21 in Paris with an agreement based on real solutions. COP21 is the 21st session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change from November 30 to December 11, 2015. “Climate catastrophes are a reality right presently. But the COP21 is not based on that reality, only on what is politically expedient. The agreement is based on a carbon market that allows developed nations to continue to emit dangerously high levels of greenhouse gasses through shell games, imaginary techno-fixes, and trading schemes that result in land grabs and human rights violations,” said Alberto Salamando, a human rights expert with the Indigenous Environmental Network.
  • Paris Climate Change Summit: Why It Is Bound To Fail

FRANCE, 2015/12/02 Expectations are high for a good and equitable new climate change agreement at the much anticipated on-going climate change summit in Paris. Such expectations are elusive if the negotiations fail to face reality and set aside divisive national interests for the world good, humanity and the planet. After 21 years of negotiations, hopes are high that a new climate change agreement at the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UFCCC) in Paris will break new ground on saving the planet from the grave threat of climate change. However, the obstacles to reaching a transaction is not on the issues perse, but how the UNFCCC negotiation process itself has not addressed or postponed critical decisions thus far, which Paris has to presently resolve. Under the pretext of a new comprehensive world transaction, the Paris talks are expected to address the failings of completed negotiations and resolve it at one go.
