I’d like to flip this around and ask: What does the ‘new Fiji’ represent to you? The new Fiji is a place of equal opportunities, where talent is recognized and hard work is rewarded. Before you build a country’s infrastructure, you need to initial have good people. In order to do that you need to care for the people, build capacity and allow people to grow. That is the new Fiji. Fiji has made remarkable economic evolution in recent years, with the increase in 2015 expected to exceed 4% for the third consecutive year.     AFGHANISTAN, 2015/01/20 Low oil prices will not provide a sufficient updraught to dispel the clouds hanging over the world economy, the International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday.   • Oxfam Study Finds Richest 1% Is Likely to Control Half of Global Wealth by 2016

    AFGHANISTAN, 2015/01/20 The richest 1 % are likely to control additional than half of the globe’s total wealth by next year, the charity Oxfam reported in a study released on Monday. The warning about deepening world inequality comes just as the world’s business elite prepare to meet this week at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The 80 wealthiest people in the world all own $1.9 trillion, the statement found, nearly the same all shared by the 3.5 billion people who occupy the bottom half of the world’s gain scale. (Last year, it took 85 billionaires to equal that figure.) And the richest 1 % of the people, who number in the millions, control nearly half of the world’s total wealth, a share that is as well increasing.
  • Fiji Airways to hit milestone this year

    FIJI, 2014/12/05 Fiji Airways, Fiji’s National Airline, is pleased to announce that it will hit a milestone this year. The airline will surpass one million international passengers this schedule year for the initial time in its 63-year history. To celebrate this feat, on December 20, one lucky passenger on a Fiji Airways flight from Nadi will be awarded a one-millionth passenger commemoration souvenir, along with a round-trip ticket to the destination of his or her choice. Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO, states, “We’re delighted to hit the one-millionth passenger mark for the initial time ever for Fiji Airways’ international flights. It’s a great reflection of the hard work done by our team to increase passenger numbers and revenue. Next year will be even better, as we will offer nearly 1.4 million seats on Fiji Airways; so, at our current load factor of around 85%, we will be able to accommodate around 1.3 million guests on our flights to and from Fiji.”
  • Fiji Airways welcomes new aircraft for its subsidiary

    FIJI, 2014/09/17 The Fiji Airways Group welcomes its new ATR 42-600 aircraft for its subsidiary, Fiji Link, at the airline’s Chief Office in Nadi. The new aircraft, which made the long journey to its new home from Toulouse, France, is in line with the National Airline’s Five-Year-Masterplan, to increase its fleet size by 25% and expand relevant Fiji Link capacity by 12.3% in the domestic market. Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways Group Managing Director and CEO states, “As we announced in January, we have set ourselves the goal to become a leading boutique airline with prudent and sustainable capacity increases across our network. Bringing in new aircraft, such as this new ATR 42, will help us in our capacity requirements in the domestic and regional markets inclunding provide our passengers the friendly Fiji Link hospitality in the comfort of a new plane.”
  • Solar farm project

    FIJI, 2014/06/05 A NEW 67-kilowatt solar farm was launched in Vuda, Lautoka, yesterday, marking an extra milestone in renewable energy initiatives in the country. Owned by Total (Fiji) Limited, the solar farm will supply 100megawatts of electricity each hour for a year. Company managing director Sylvian Quemeneur said the pilot project was designed to sustain Total (Fiji) Ltd's Vuda plant. "The pilot project has been ongoing for one year so the cost of the solar panels is not relevant from presently on and we cannot reveal from presently on how much the costs are," he said. "As a pilot, we were most interested to see how we can push ahead with this technology in Fiji particularly in Vuda because we have the perfect spot to install these solar panels. It is definitely our commitment to better energy.

    FIJI, 2014/06/05 METHAMPHETAMINE is the major drug threat to Fiji and the Pacific, UN Office on Drugs and Crime regional representative for South East Asia and the Pacific Jeremy Douglas believes. Mr Douglas, in an exclusive interview with The Fiji Times, said methamphetamine, a synthetic drug as well known as meth or ice, could be made anywhere. "You can move production wherever you want. You can't make cocaine or heroin just anywhere because they are plant-based drugs but synthetic drugs, if you have the chemicals and if you have the smart chemists, you can make the drugs anywhere," Mr Douglas said.

    FIJI, 2013/08/11 Fiji Airways, Fiji's national airline is the newest holder of a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title, soaring to 41,000 feet to set the record for the world's 'Highest Altitude Wedding on an Aeroplane'. Five couples exchanged vows on August 7 at 41,000 feet above sea level aboard a brand new Fiji Airways A330 to attain the record. The minimum altitude required to set this new world record was 40,000 feet.

    FIJI, 2012/02/11 On January 20, 2012, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) concluded the Article IV consultation with the Republic of Fiji. Background Fiji’s economy is growing at a very slow pace, and that overshadows amount other economic concerns. After averaging 2¾ % during the 1990s inclunding the first years of the new millennium, increase dropped to under ¼ % on average over the last years, and while urban poverty has declined, rural poverty remains stubbornly high.

    FIJI, 2011/04/18 Fiji and China Monday held a trade and investment forum here to promote economic cooperation between the two countries. The forum was held while a 36-member Chinese Business Delegation is in Fiji to seek various investment opportunities. Speaking at the occasion, Fiji's Trade Minister Aiyaz Sayed- Khaiyum said that Fiji has a lot to learn from China in relation to economic developments.
