Mecronesia Communication Profile 2012
Telecoms Market Overview & Statistics
All telecommunications services in Micronesia are provided by government-owned FSM Telecom (FSMTC), including Internet and mobile telephony. The telecommunications infrastructure compares favourably with many of the islands in the South Pacific region. Great distances between islands and their isolated location coupled with mountainous terrain and dense jungle add to the difficulties in deploying cost-effective national communications infrastructure. In 2005 FSMTC installed a wireless Internet service and conducted a soft launch of a Digital Wireless Broadband TV service in Yap. In 2006 Huawei began to replace and upgrade FSMTC's existing GSM network to a GSM/GPRS/EDGE network with high-speed packet data service capabilities.
