Finland: Finnish Unemployment Rate Rises In October

Finland's unemployment rate increased notably in October from last year, data released by Statistics Finland showed Tuesday.

The unemployment rate climbed to 7.4 % in October from 6.9 % last year. The number of unemployed persons in the country increased to around 194,000 from about 183,000.

The unemployment rate for young people, aged 15 to 24, was 16.6 % during the month, higher by 0.4 % points than in October 2012.

The employment rate, meanwhile, dropped to 68.1 % in October from 68.7 % in September. The number of employed persons decreased to around 2.43 million from 2.47 million.

Separately, flash estimates released by the statistical office showed that Finland's retail sales, in volume terms, increased 0.6 % year-on-year in October. At the same time, the price of retail sales moved up 1 % from October 2012.

Goods exports fell 11 % annually to EUR4.41 billion in August. Shipments to the European Union nations dropped 8 %, and dispatches to the Eurozone decreased by 5 %.
