Argentina: Four LatAm countries could auction 700MHz spectrum in 2014 – 4G Americas

2013/10/15

Four nations in Latin America could auction spectrum in the 700MHz band next year, according to a statement by 4G advocacy group 4G Americas.

Most regulators in the region have expressed interest in auctioning 700MHz spectrum for mobile broadband services, but face the challenge of guaranteeing that these frequencies are free from interference, as in a lot of markets, analog TV signals must be migrated to a digital format in order to free up spectrum in the 700MHz band for use by mobile services.

The Chilean government is expected to auction spectrum in the 700MHz band in February of next year, according to telecoms regulator Subtel.

Meanwhile, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia may as well tender spectrum in the band during 2014, according to 4G Americas.

The Brazilian government is currently studying plans to relocate analog TV channels in the 700MHz spectrum in order to free up blocks for 4G transmission, which regulator Anatel plans to hold in the second quarter of next year.

Meanwhile, Mexico has outlined plans to award 90MHz of 700MHz spectrum to national operator Telecomm Telégrafos with the aim of creating a public telecommunications network as part of its wide-ranging telecoms reform program approved before this year.

In Colombia, the 700MHz spectrum was expected to take place in 3Q13, but is presently possibly expected in 2014 following delays in the higher-band tender which took place in June.

Several auctions in other bands are as well expected to take place next year, with the possibility of a spectrum tender in the AWS band in Argentina.

The government has said that it is working to define the conditions of a bidding process to award 4G spectrum, and that national telco ArSat will have a key role someday offering of LTE in the country.

Venezuela could as well award spectrum in the AWS band next year, according to4GAmericas.

Meanwhile, Ecuador is expected to provide spectrum to private operators in the 1,900MHz band before the end of the year, having granted spectrum to national operator CNT at the end of 2012.

The all of spectrum which has been allocated in Latin America currently reaches only 20% of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) goals for 2015, according to a statement by regional consultancy firm Signals Telecom Consulting and 4G Americas.
