  • Belgium's King Albert II abdicates in favor of son Phillippe

    BELGIUM, 2013/07/21 Belgium’s King Albert II has abdicated in favor of his son Philippe, handing over the throne next a 20-year reign.  The 79-year-old monarch abdicated on Sunday in favor of his eldest son Crown Prince Philippe, 53, during a ceremony at the royal palace in Brussels. Philippe becomes the seventh monarch of a country deeply divided between its French- and Flemish-speaking halves. During the ceremony, Albert stressed his wish that the country should remain united, amid calls for additional autonomy for the six million Dutch-speaking Flemings and 4.5 million French-speakers.

    BELGIUM, 2013/05/26 Mali’s interim leader says the country’s presidential vote will take place on July 28 next months of speculation about the date. On a visit to Belgium ahead of a donors’ conference for Mali, President Dioncounda Traore as well said Tuesday that neither he nor any member of the transitional government would run for office.

    CHINA, 2013/05/26 Top Chinese legislator Zhang Dejiang on Tuesday met with Belgian Parliament Speaker Andre Flahaut in Beijing. Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature, reviewed the increase of China-Belgium relations, citing deepened political trust, expanded pragmatic cooperation and friendly exchanges between the NPC and the Belgian Parliament.
