Cyprus signed an energy transaction with Egypt on Monday that could see the island supplying its Mediterranean neighbour with gas.
Cyprus is keen to exploit the Aphrodite field off its southeastern coast but the reserves proven so far are not considered sufficient to make it viable for the island to develop onshore export infrastructure of its own.
Monday's transaction authorises the "Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company and the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company to examine technical solutions for transporting natural gas, through a direct marine pipeline, from the Aphrodite field to Egypt."

Appraisal drilling in Cyprus' Block 12 begins today, the outcome of which will have a significant influence on the development of the hydrocarbons industry in the country as Cyprus Mail reports. Speaking to reporters, Commerce Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis said Noble Energy would begin appraisal work on the Aphrodite field in Block 12 of Cyprus' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) today, which is expected to last three to four months.

Cyprus said Wednesday it was making good evolution with a second round of licensing for exploratory drilling aimed at exploiting offshore oil and gas deposits.
In October drilling permits, subject to negotiation, were approved for blocks 2, 3, 9 and 11, and on Wednesday block 10 was as well added to the inventory. "Negotiations with applicants for blocks 2 and 3 have made significant evolution while evolution has been made in negotiations for block 11,"said government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou.
