  • Swiss authorities open criminal proceedings against FIFA president

    SWITZERLAND, 2015/09/26 The Swiss Attorney General has opened criminal proceedings against Fifa president Sepp Blatter in the heart of the Zurich HQ he has dominated as president for 17 years, as the ongoing corruption crisis gripping world football took an extra dramatic turn. The office of the attorney general said in a statement that it had interrogated Blatter following a conference on Friday of the Fifa executive committee. At the same time Michel Platini, the Uefa president who is hoping to replace him next year, was heard “as a person asked to provide data”. Fifa HQ was as well searched and data seized from Blatter’s office, causing a scheduled press conference to be cancelled amid fevered speculation.

    EUROPEAN UNION, 2014/02/13 Switzerland took the lead to say no to immigration from EU Nations. The next country to follow in its footsteps may be Norway. This Scandinavian country to hold its own referendum on limiting immigration from the EU. “I won't take a stance on such a quota system that the Swiss people have voted for. But the idea of a referendum is interesting, and Norway as well should have a referendum on immigration,” said Mazyar Keshvari, immigration spokesman for the Evolution Party (FrP), which is part of Norway’s Conservative-led government. “I am completely sure that there is majority support for tightening immigration across Norway's political parties. The polls show that,” he told VG newspaper.

    SWITZERLAND, 2013/10/08 Switzerland's jobless rate remained unchanged at seasonally adjusted 3.2 % in September, data from the National Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) showed Tuesday. Likewise, the unadjusted unemployment rate held steady at 3 % in September. There were 131,072 unemployed at the end of September, up 1,116 from the prior month. From the same period of last year, unemployment rose by 10,725. The youth unemployment decreased slightly by 0.3 % from the prior month to 20,137 in September, data showed.

    SWITZERLAND, 2013/08/30 Switzerland's employment continued to increase in the second quarter despite a fall in the secondary sector, the Federal Statistical Office said Thursday. The number of employed increased to 4.166 million from 4.152 million in the previous quarter. The decline in the secondary sector was offset by a sharp development in the tertiary sector.
