  • UNWTO: International tourism – strongest half-year results since 2010

    AFGHANISTAN, 2017/09/09 Destinations worldwide welcomed 598 million international tourists in the initial six months of 2017, some 36 million additional than in the same period of 2016. At 6%, increase was well above the trend of recent years, making the current January-June period the strongest half-year since 2010. Visitor numbers reported by destinations around the world reflect strong request for international travel in the initial half of 2017, according to the new UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Worldwide, international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) increased by 6% compared to the same six-month period last year, well above the sustained and consistent trend of 4% or higher increase since 2010. This represents the strongest half-year in seven years.
  • Albania mulls new policy package to upgrade tourism industry

    ALBANIA, 2015/09/29 Albanian government is preparing a policy package to improve the tourism sector and the price-added tax (VAT) for accommodation facilities will be reduced, said a government official on Sunday. "In the region we have Greece which applies a tax at the level of 6.5 %, Montenegro at 7 %, Macedonia at 5 % and Italy at 8 %. We have proposed a reduction of VAT to about 10 %," said Sonja Popa, director of tourism development in Albanian Ministry of Economic Development and Tourism. The legislation would as well provide businesses that want to invest to improve infrastructure with soft loans, thus addressing the major problem of Albanian tourism, and poor service.

    ALBANIA, 2011/07/28 According to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports, a total of 567,835 visitors came to Albania from January through May. That's an increase of 163,393, or 40 per cent, over the same period last year. Albanian tourism has experienced exponential growth in the last few years, as the country slowly emerges from a difficult and often tumultuous transition period.
