  • Cabo Verde aim of 100 % coverage by renewable energy by 2020,

    CAPE VERDE, 2013/12/01 The European Union is available to assist Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) in achieving its aim of 100 % coverage by renewable energy by 2020, Cape Verdean Prime Minister José Maria Neves said in Brussels where he took part in the European Development Days. “The commissioner for Cooperation and Development, Andrés Piebalgs, welcomed the idea and showed he was available to assist us to achieve 100 % coverage of renewable energy,” said the Prime Minister at the end of conference with the commissioner. Cited by the Cape Verdean press, the Prime Minister noted that renewable energy was one of the “great priorities” of cooperation between Cabo Verde and the European Union.
  • Econet Launches New Energy Solution in Zimbabwe

    ZIMBABWE, 2013/11/17 ECONET Solar announced plans to formally introduce a new energy solution that aims to avert power shortages in Zimbabwe. Dubbed the Home Power Station, the solution will be launched in the country in February. In an exclusive interview with CAJ News in Cape Town on Tuesday, Econet Solar General Manager for Services-Technical, Brighton Muzondo, said the innovation was cheaper, user-friendly, efficient and readily available to the poorest people in both the urban areas and countryside.
  • Africa’s major wind farm for power generation at Ashegoda,

    ETHIOPIA, 2013/10/27 Ethiopia will Saturday launch what it claims to be Africa’s major wind farm for power generation at Ashegoda, 18 km from Mekelle, the northern Tigray regional capital. Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) said here Friday that the wind farm has a power generating capacity of 120MW and will produce about 400 million KWh a year. The Ashegoda project, completed on schedule within 36 months, included the construction of access and maintenance roads for next operations and a new sub-station which interfaces with the EEPCo grid system.
  • Best clean energy entrepreneurs to be honoured in West Africa

    AFRICA, 2013/10/06 The Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), a multi-donor initiative administered by the African Development Bank (AfDB), will participate in the West Africa Clean Energy Finance Forum (WAFCEF) which will honour the best entrepreneurs identified during the year, 2013, in the region. According to an official statement, received by PANA here Friday, the finalists will be identified by co-sponsors of the event, inclunding the Private Financing Advisory Network (CTI PFAN) and the Regional Clean Energy Investment Initiative (RCEII) of the US Agency for International Improvment(USAID).
  • Geothermal energy development in Rift Valley countries

    BURUNDI, 2013/09/06 In its bid to assist African Rift Valley nations in the development of geothermal energy resource, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA) have signed a memorandum of considerate for cooperation in the field. According to the agreement initialed by the two parties here Wednesday, the AUC and ICEIDA will work together to develop and implement geothermal energy policy inclunding investment , regulatory and institutional guidelines, part other areas, in eleven African Rift Valley countries
  • Energy Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah

    GHANA, 2013/08/09 Energy Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has disclosed the government's desire to increase the use of renewable energy - solar, wind and thermal - in the country, from the current paltry less than one % to 10 % by the year 2020. Saying such was the objective behind the Renewable Energy Act passed recently by Parliament, the Minister urged estate developers to provide for solar and other clean sources of energy in new homes, inclunding take chance of the feed-in tariffs in the law that allow ordinary citizens to generate solar or other renewable energy into the national grid for financial incentives.
  • Seychelles green energy independence

    SEYCHELLES, 2013/07/22 On two islands surrounded by deep turquoise water, the blades of eight wind turbines spin, providing a rare source of “green” energy for the port of Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles. The popular tourist archipelago far out in the Indian Ocean is almost entirely dependent on imported fossil fuels for power, but is instantly embracing renewable energy. The new wind farm opened last month with funding from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and has a total capacity of 6 megawatts, enough to power about 2,000 houses in Mahe — the major island of the Seychelles, which is home to 70,000 people, about 90 % of the total people.

    EUROPEAN UNION, 2013/06/08 The European Union (EU) Thursday announced a 15-million-euro donation to member-states of the Indian Ocean Commission (COI) to enable them fund their projects on renewable energy and energy sustainability, the COI Secretary General, Jean-Claude de l’Estrac, disclosed.

A public tender for independent renewable power providers – launched in 2011 – is delivering chunky investments, and last week marked the deadline for the signing and financial close of the second wave of bids with a third round due to kick off in July.
