  • Cotton prices may fall further if electric and gas supply is not restored for the textile sector

    PAKISTAN, 2012/12/25 Due to periodic disruptions of electricity and gas supply throughout Punjab, textile mills have deferred procurement of cotton lint from ginning factories, which observers say may lead to a fall in cotton prices. Market sources said there are worries about a slowdown in the textile production process, a fall in cotton exports and the resulting redundancy of tens of thousands of workers. These are coupled with fears of the crisis spreading to cotton ginners and farmers.
  • Indonesia Industry Ministry urges wage hike exception

    INDONESIA, 2012/12/22 In an attempt to meet the country's expected industrial increase by the end of 2013, Indonesia's Industry Ministry has recommended that labor-intensive firms, including textile, garment and shoe manufacturers, be exempted from adopting a new minimum wage in the new year. Industry Minister MS Hidayat said on Monday that his office was “upbeat” about the country's nonoil and gas industry growing to between 6.8 % to 7.1 % next year, despite the challenges of poor infrastructure and the high cost of investment. However, he said the estimated increase may not be realized if labor-intensive companies, which employed tens of thousands of workers, remained under the new minimum wage between 30 and 40 % to around 2.2 million rupiah (US$228) next year.
  • China's steel industry is facing a problem

    CHINA, 2012/12/22 China's steel industry is facing a problem of overcapacity, with steel prices at 1994 levels, a senior official said. "The steel industry is facing an increasingly difficult time, and the surplus capacity is worsening," said Zhang Changfu, secretary-general of the China Iron & Steel Association, at an annual meeting organized by mysteel.com, a steel industry website.

    BANGLADESH, 2012/12/20   Despite having an image crisis in some areas, Bangladesh's shipbuilding sector has taken the country to a different height creating a scope to earn US$ 2 billion a year, shipbuilders say. The country has been doing excellent in the sector and can easily take the lead in the world market if the government and private sector can walk together with a pragmatic plan ensuring logistic and policy supports, they said. Association of Export Oriented Shipbuilding Industries of Bangladesh and Export Promotion Bureau jointly arranged the seminar, 'Problems in Exporting Ship from Bangladesh and their Solutions', at city's Hotel Ruposhi Bangla. Industries Minister Dilip Barua attended the inaugural session of the seminar as the chief guest while Commerce Minister GM Quader as a special guest.
  • South Korea Industrial Production Rise 0.8% In September 2012-10-31

    SOUTH KOREA, 2012/10/31 South Korea's industrial production expanded a seasonally adjusted 0.8 % on month in September, Statistics Korea said on Wednesday - in line with forecasts after falling 0.7 % in August.On a yearly basis, industrial production added 0.7 % after rising 0.3 % in the previous month, as well matching expectations.
  • China automobile sales zoom past US

    CHINA, 2011/02/23 China has for the prime time topped the US in automobile sales last month, as a series of industry and market support measures adopted by the government have begun to take effect. In January, China sold 735,500 units of vehicles, 14.35 % less year-on-year amid falling request, with a slight drop of 0.83 % from December, China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said yesterday. The figure still far surpasses the sales dive in the US where monthly sales plummeted 37 % from last January to 656,693 vehicles, the worst since 1963.

  • Machinery Orders Decline for Second Month

    JAPAN, 2010/12/08 Japanese machinery orders fell for a second month in October because of declining request from the service sector, adding to signs that the country’s export-led recovery is stalling. Factory orders fell 1.4 % from September, at the same time as they dropped 10.3 %, the biggest slide since March 2008, the Cabinet Office said today in Tokyo. Orders, an indicator of capital spending in three to months, were projected to fall 0.1 %, according to the median estimate of 28 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.
