  • Caspian states discusses ecology of Caspian Sea

    KAZAKHSTAN, 2013/03/23 A regional seminar entitled 'Caspian Sea - Sustainable Development and Management' has finished its work at the Turkmen resort city of Awaza in cooperation with the International Ocean Institute (IOI), Turkmen government said on Wednesday.  The forum organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and National Enterprise for the Caspian Sea under the President of Turkmenistan is being attended by heads and specialists of ministries, agencies and the environmental institutions of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, inclunding international experts.

  • Indonesia palm oil thirst bleeds jungles dry

    INDONESIA, 2012/12/25 The roar of chainsaws has restored birdsong, the once-lush, green jungle scorched to a barren gray. The equivalent of soccer fields of forest is lost each minute in Indonesia. The disappearance of the trees has pushed thousands of animals — from the birds they harbor and sustain to orangutans, gibbons and black panthers — out of their natural homes and habitats. They have been restored by plantations that are too nutrient-poor to support such wildlife, instead dedicated solely to producing fruit that is pulped to make oil used globally in products ranging from food to fuel.

    CHINA, 2012/12/24 South Korean and Chinese SMEs discussed ways to expand bilateral green partnerships in a forum on Nov. 29 in Qingdao, Shandong province, China. The forum, hosted by ASEIC, was held after the Chinese government pledged to invest in projects that would move it toward a green economy in July.
  • UN action needed on climate change displacement

    ASIA, 2012/12/15 Climate change-induced displacement and migration have been discussed and researched since the 1970s. Essam El-Hinnawi of the UN Environment Programme was one of the first to offer a definition, describing ‘environmental refugees’ as ‘those people who have been forced to leave their traditional habitat, temporarily or permanently, because of a marked environmental disruption (natural and/or triggered by people) that jeopardized their existence and/or seriously affected the quality of their life [sic]’.
  • Singapore to Achieve Cleaner Air by 2020

    SINGAPORE, 2012/12/11 Singapore is aiming for cleaner air and has set 2020 as the deadline to make this happen. To work towards this, it has adopted World Health Organization guidelines on air quality as a target.Until now, Singapore had used these guidelines only as benchmarks. To achieve cleaner air, extra stringent anti-pollution measures for vehicles, refineries and power generation companies will have to be introduced.

    ASIA, 2011/02/24 The study analysed the aims and achievements of 22 major Asian cities with respect to environmental and climate protection. While Singapore is the only country with a rating well above the average, Bangkok is in the "average" group, on a par with Beijing, Delhi, Guangzhou, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Nanjing, Shanghai and Wuhan. Hong Kong, Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo and Yokohama are in the "above average" group. Singapore stands out in particular for its ambitious environmental targets and its efficient approach to achieving them. It turned out as Asia’s greenest metropolis.
