Energy in Asia

  • Indonesian thermal power plants need of steam coal to cross 1 billion tonnes

INDONESIA, 2013/01/01 Bloomberg reported that coal fired power stations in Indonesia agreed to buy 63 million tonnes of the fuel this year, about 10 % additional than estimate consumption to minimize outages. Mr Helmi Najamuddin chief of the coal division at Jakarta based PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara in an interview said that Indonesia will need an estimated 57.3 million tonnes of coal in the country's power plants this year."
  • Japan's LNG demand could reach 88.7 million mt by 2020

JAPAN, 2013/01/01 Japan's annual LNG request is estimated to reach 82.4 million mt in 2012, up from 80.1 million mt in 2011, and could reach 88.7 million mt by 2020 if nuclear power is not restarted LNG consumption in the country has grown since the Fukushima disaster in March 2011, which saw nuclear power in the country switched off. In 2010, LNG request was 69.8 million mt/year and increased to 80.1 million mt/year in 2011.
  • India's energy consumption to double by 2031

INDIA, 2013/01/01 Energy consumption in India is likely to double to 1,124 kgs of oil equivalent (kgoe) by 2031-32 on the back of high economic expansion, a joint study by consultancy Deloitte and industry chamber Assocham showed Wednesday. The statement said a multi-pronged strategy, like increasing production of oil and gas and diversifying import sources, are needed to meet growing energy request in India, which is heavily dependent on imports.
  • Myanmar's gas, electricity price on the rise

MYANMAR, 2013/01/01 The Ministry of Electric Power is set to compensate for an estimated K368.952 billion (US$430 million) loss in the 2013-2014 fiscal year by increasing the price of electricity and natural gas, senior representatives of Myanmar Electric Power Enterprises (MEPE) announced last week.
  • The price of electricity in Vietnam

VIETNAM, 2012/12/24 The price of electricity in Vietnam is set increase by 5 % to 1,437 dong (US$0.06) excluding VAT for 1 kWh from today, following a circular issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade on Thursday. But the price of electricity for low-income households, who use less than 50kWh per month, will remain unchanged at 933 dong per kWh.
  • large power projects

BANGLADESH, 2012/12/20 Speakers at a discussion on Sunday stressed the need for speeding up the implementation of various large power projects to phase-out the quick-rental plants for keeping the electricity tariff at affordable level. They said long-term power projects must be given priority and at the same time, the government should take steps to overhaul existing power plants timely and check system losses to improve the in general power supply situation. The Forum for Energy Reporters Bangladesh (FERB) organised the seminar with its Chairman and Editor of the fortnightly Energy and Power Mollah Amzad Hossain in the chair. FERB Director Rafiqul Bashar presented the keynote paper.
  • Energy cooperation in Asia

ASIA, 2012/12/15 Asian request for primary energy grew by over 70 % in this period and accounted for extra than 65 % of total world primary energy increase. While some countries — Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore — are rich, others, including the majority populous (China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand), are middle- benefits countries now in the energy-intensive development phase. Primary energy consumption ranges from 150 gigajoules per capita (GJ/cap) in Australia to 12 GJ/cap in the Philippines. By way of contrast, China sits at 50 GJ/cap, India 16 GJ/cap and Japan 110 GJ/cap.
  • Chinese generators show improved results

CHINA, 2012/12/13 After an extended period of financial pain, most of China's power generators reported much-improved results in the first half of 2012. In a country where extra than three-quarters of electricity is produced from coal-fired plants, the improved earnings in large among reflect the fact that power station coal prices fell steadily throughout the six-month period. In the first half of 2012, domestic and imported coal prices fell as a result of the muted increase in electricity request combined with high hydroelectric output, coal production and coal stocks. This has eased the pressure on thermal generators, who were already benefiting from increases in the second half of 2011 in the tariffs they receive for coal-fired power in much of the country.
  • China power supply: Dramatic growth expected to 2030

CHINA, 2012/12/12 Superlatives are often used to describe the Chinese power sector, but its growth over the last two decades has been unprecedented in its own right, as well as in the context of other industrialised nations. Power output doubled between 1990 and 2000. The next doubling occurred between 2005 and 2006, and the third is likely to have occurred this year. What's more, China has entered into this parabolic phase of growth far earlier in its development cycle than comparable countries.
  • LNG terminal hub on track

PHILIPPINES, 2012/12/11 “We are on time, on target. By January 2014, our terminal hub will be operational and we hope that our first 150-megawatt ( MW) power plant can be ready by 2016,” Eduardo T. Rodriguez, country manager of EWC, told reporters on the sidelines of the Energy Investment Forum at F1 Hotel, Bonifacio World City in Taguig late Thursday last week.
