    QATAR, 2017/09/16 The Arab nations that have cut ties with Qatar may have additional to lose from the spat compared to the gas-rich national they are targeting, according to the group chief executive of the Middle East's major bank by assets. The blockade, which initial unfolded in June, saw Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain accusing Qatar of supporting terrorism and allying with regional foe Iran. Qatar denied those claims, but its stock market and currency suffered from the initial shock of the crisis.

    ZIMBABWE, 2017/09/09 President Robert Mugabe said on Friday that Zimbabwe’s economy, hobbled by foreign currency shortages and a widening budget deficit, was slowly rebounding and would be driven by mining and agriculture. Without giving details, Mugabe told a conference of the ruling ZANU-PF’s central committee that the former British colony was on the way to regaining its status as a regional breadbasket and was expecting a bumper harvest of the staple maize in 2017.

Nigeria‘s GDP expanded by 0.55% in the second quarter of 2017 year-on-year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, ending five consecutive quarters of contraction. Quarter-on-quarter increase for the same period was 3.23%.
  • Inflation in Russia continues to fall below Central Bank target

    RUSSIA, 2017/09/07 Russians can see inflation of 3.4 % as of August, according to Economic Development Minister Maksim Oreshkin. This is below the four % target set by the Central Bank of Russia. We had very low rates of decline in prices in August; the data on inflation will be published in the next few days, and the rate will be near 3.4 %," Oreshkin said on the sidelines of the BRICS forum in China on Tuesday.

  • Blockaded Qatar's economy troubled, but coping

    QATAR, 2017/09/02 Qatar's economy has been hit by the sanctions imposed by a Saudi-led Arab bloc but the emirate's economy is strong enough to survive, analysts say. Since June 5, Saudi Arabia and allies Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates shut down air, maritime and land links with Qatar, and imposed economic sanctions, accusing Doha of supporting "terrorists" and of being too close to Iran. Qatar, denying the charges, accuses its Gulf neighbours of seeking to strangle its economy.
