    MALAYSIA, 2013/01/16 Eight firms have been awarded 4G spectrum to offer LTE services in Malaysia by the country’s regulator, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Celcom Axiata, DiGi Telecommunications, Maxis Broadband, Packet One Networks, Puncak Semangat, REDtone Marketing, U Mobile and YTL Communications won their bids for an allocation in the 2.6GHz frequency. Maxis is the market leader with 12.8 million subscribers, while Celcom holds second place with 12.4 million.
  • Telenor to limit funding for Indian operations

    INDIA, 2013/01/16 Scandinavian operator Telenor has scaled back its Indian unit, stating that it intends to spend no additional than INR155 billion (US$2.85 billion), with the goal of recouping this amount by the end of Q4 2013. The operator’s CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas said: “The decision by India’s Supreme Court in February to revoke amount our licenses took the entire industry by surprise and we were faced with an intense period of uncertainty for the next 10 months.” Next taking the decision to acquire new licences in the recent spectrum auctions, Telenor has presently established its “strategic direction and financial objectives” for the Indian market.

    CHINA, 2013/01/06 China on Friday penalised Samsung and LG, along with firms from Taiwan for manipulating the prices of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels in the Chinese mainland. Samsung and LG leading LCD panel makers of the Republic of Korea, inclunding Chi Mei Optoelectronics, AU Optronics, Chunghwa Picture Tubes and HannStar Display from Taiwan have been fined a total of 353 million yuan ($56 million) for price-rigging between 2001 and 2006, the National Development and Reform Commission(NDRC), the price regulator said.
  • Viettel offshore operations yield first profit

    VIETNAM, 2012/12/23 Vietnam’s military-run telecom firm Viettel has reported the first profit made in foreign markets, which proves its overseas investment strategy is on the right track. According to Le Dang Dung, deputy general director of Viettel, the company’s operations in Cambodia have been successful over the past three years. Viettel has so far invested $40 million into Cambodia but it remitted home $35 million in profit generated from Cambodia business operations last year.
