  • Jaguar Land Rover Takes Next Step in Aluminium Recycling with REALITY Program

    UNITED KINGDOM, 2017/09/16 British multinational car company Jaguar Land Rover Limited announced a new project for reusing recycled aluminium in new car production before this week. The program, known as REALITY, is the next step in JLR’s ongoing strategy of harvesting aluminium from end-of-life cars and reintegrating it in new vehicles. The £2-million (US$2.62 million) project builds upon its existing REALCAR project, which the firm says yielded in over 75 thousand metric tons of aluminium scrap being reintegrated in new JLR units. Begun in 2008, REALCAR, which is spearheaded by Jaguar Land Rover, is a collaboration of several firms to develop a “closed-loop vehicle production model” that utilizes recycled aluminium. JLR has invested £13 million (US$17 million) in the project thus far, which it says will yield substantial benefits both to the environment and the firm’s bottom line, as utilizing recycled aluminium consumes as much as 95 % less energy than smelting primary aluminium from bauxite ore.

The three new sizes, namely 25 Cl Sleek, 45 Cl Super Sleek, and 90 Cl King, will make their world debut at drinktec 2017 this week. However, both the 90 Cl and 45 Cl versions are by presently available and in use in the Russian Federation by domestic beer brewers in response to alcohol exise duties in that country. Ball sales manager Irina Dolyanovskaya said the new sizes fill a request that has emerged across several European nations.

    CHINA, 2017/09/16 The world’s second major aluminium extrusion firm China Zhongwang Holdings Ltd announced yesterday that it presently holds a controlling interest in German aluminium extrusion firm Aluminiumwerk Unna AG (ALUnna). Although no price for the purchase was given, the transaction gives all owned German subsidiary Zhongwang Aluminium Deutschland GmbH a 99.72-% equity interest in ALUnna. According to experts, the purchase enhances Zhongwang’s position in the world aviation market inclunding giving the firm a stronger foothold on the European continent.
  • Rusal Completes US$7.6-Million Modernization Project at Irkutsk Aluminium Smelter

    RUSSIA, 2017/09/13 Russian Federation aluminium titan UC Rusal announced yesterday the completion of a US$7.6 million project to modify its Befesa-2 line at Irkutsk Aluminium Smelter (IrkAZ) in eastern Siberia. The just-completed modifications were carried out by Rusal’s Engineering and Technology Center in conjunction with Spain’s Befesa Aluminio S.L. and included the addition of a new casting wheel, a metal distribution system, a newly-designed ingot mold, improvements to the water cooling system, and a new ingot extraction and transportation unit. The firm says it plans to make similar improvements to the adjacent Befesa-1 line.
  • Submarine cable deployed in Angola to link Africa to South America

    ANGOLA, 2017/09/09 The project of deploying the initial submarine telecommunication cable in the South Atlantic ocean linking Africa to South America has been launched in Angola’s capital Luanda. The launch of the fibre-optic South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) follows months of marine survey that was completed by multinational telecommunications company Angola Cables in April.
  • UNWTO: International tourism – strongest half-year results since 2010

    AFGHANISTAN, 2017/09/09 Destinations worldwide welcomed 598 million international tourists in the initial six months of 2017, some 36 million additional than in the same period of 2016. At 6%, increase was well above the trend of recent years, making the current January-June period the strongest half-year since 2010. Visitor numbers reported by destinations around the world reflect strong request for international travel in the initial half of 2017, according to the new UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Worldwide, international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) increased by 6% compared to the same six-month period last year, well above the sustained and consistent trend of 4% or higher increase since 2010. This represents the strongest half-year in seven years.
  • Russia's Rosneft inks oil production & supply deal with China

    CHINA, 2017/09/07 Russian oil major Rosneft has announced a strategic cooperation agreement and long-term oil supply arrangement with CEFC China Energy Company. The transaction was sealed on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Xiamen, China. According to Rosneft, the agreement would see the development of exploration and production projects in Western and Eastern Siberia. The two companies as well agreed to cooperate in refining, petrochemicals and crude trading.
