    WORLD, 2013/05/17 Study identifies economic opportunities in horticulture exports from developing nations - The export of high-price horticulture from developing nations into developed economies is a significant opportunity for economic development, but wages in the sector are insufficient to enable a decent standard of living for workers and their dependants, according to a new joint study by Oxfam and International Procurement and Logistics (IPL).
  • FAO, Slow Food partner to bolster food production

    WORLD, 2013/05/16 The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the international Slow Food organization agreed Wednesday to develop joint actions to improve the livelihoods of smallholders and others working in rural areas. Under a three-year Memorandum of Agreement signed here, the two organizations will join forces to promote additional inclusive food and agriculture systems at local, national and international levels.
  • China gives Rwanda CFA Franc 5 billion to promote bamboo culture

    CHINA, 2013/05/16 Bamboo culture Rwanda - China is to give Rwanda CFA Franc 5 billion to support the African country in its bid to process and promote the bamboo culture. Quoting diplomatic sources here, PANA reported that an agreement to that result was signed between the Chinese Deputy Minister of Trade and Cooperation, Li Jinzao, and top Rwandan officials.

  • Concerns crude palm oil prices may keep sliding

    MALAYSIA, 2013/05/13 Palm oil stocks fell by 11.4 % in April from 2.17 million tons in March, said the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) in its new monthly release. Malaysia's palm oil inventory finally eased to 1.93 million tons in April next staying above the 2-million-ton threshold for the completed 10 months, which had led to concerns that crude palm oil (CPO) prices would likely be dragged down further.

    EUROPE, 2013/05/11 The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has said world food prices rose for a second straight month, while world production of coarse grains could set a new record this year with strong increase as well projected for world wheat and rice production.
  • Philippines to export rice for the first time in 40 years

    PHILIPPINES, 2013/04/29 Rice producers and traders in the Philippines are to export rice in May, the prime time the commodity would be exported in large volumes in 40 years, a high official of the Department of Agriculture announced here on Saturday. Dubai and Indonesia will receive 15 metric tons of black rice from the Don Bosco Foundation for Sustainable Development Inc. in North Cotabato, 20 tons of japonica from the SL Agritech in Nueva Ecija and 30 tons of long grain aromatic white rice, as well from a cooperative in Cotabato, by May 6, said Agriculture Assistant Secretary Dante de Lima.
  • Chinese state group BBCA to build maize processing factory in Brazil

    CHINA, 2013/04/28 Chinese national group BBCA is expected to invest US$320 million in building a factory to process maize in Maracaju, in the Brazilian national of Mato Grosso do Sul, under the terms of a document signed Tuesday in Beijing. Governor André Puccinelli, who signed the transaction, said that this was the biggest project carried out by a Chinese company in Mato Grosso do Sul, which was completed following three years of negotiation “mainly on a legal level.”
  • China Australia’s main client for beef and veal

    CHINA, 2013/04/28 The   general result for the month, while representative of the increase in cattle slaughter and beef production so far in 2013, fell short of half-month estimates for March, most likely due to the shorter working week for Easter. Australia’s beef and veal exports for March increased 5% year-on-year, to 87,742 tonnes swt, with the Chinese market again setting a monthly record high, at 12,320 tonnes swt (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries).
  • Livestock Sector Posts Good Growth in Recent Years

    INDIA, 2013/04/21 Planning and implementation of schemes relating to the livestock sector are likely to get a large boost in the 12th Plan. The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has got apparoval for Rs. 14,179 crore from the Planning Commission under various plan schemes. In a major restructuring exercise, a number of existing schemes relating to animal husbandry are being subsumed in the National Livestock Mission. A sum of Rs. 2800 crore has been proposed under the Mission.
