  • Zimbabwe: Obama Out of Touch With Africa

ZIMBABWE, 2015/07/29 The much vaunted "blunt message" on gay rights by United States President Barack Obama during his visit to Kenya has come and gone as he winds down his tour with a visit to Ethiopia where he is expected to address the African Union Commission.Apart from the fanfare that marked his visit, and the bilateral agreements inked, we hope Obama realises the importance of making this historic visit during President Uhuru Kenyatta's presidency and the significance of Ethiopia as home to the AU and the fight for the continent's total freedom.
  • US President talks of admiration for former South African leader

UNITED STATES, 2013/06/30 Paying tribute to his personal hero, US President Barack Obama met privately with Nelson Mandela's family as the world anxiously awaited news on the condition of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader. The conference on Saturday took place at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, hours next the president said he was not angling for a "photo op" with the ailing former South African leader. Obama praised Mandela's "moral courage" during remarks from the grand Union Buildings, Johannesburg, where Madiba, as he is called in South Africa, was inaugurated as his country's initial black president.
  • Obama ready to redraw map of US relations with Africa

SOUTH AFRICA, 2013/06/30     By their own admission US envoys to Africa tend to spend the majority of their time fighting fires – preoccupied with troubled corners of the continent at the expense of furthering commercial ties in its brighter spots.  So the focus on trade and investment that President Barack Obama plans to bring will be welcome both for the nations he is visiting this week – Senegal in the west, South Africa and Tanzania in the east – and for US companies waking up to African economic potential.
