  • China to allow mainlanders to make transit stops in Taiwan

TAIWAN AREA, 2016/01/06 China said on Tuesday it would allow transit stops in Taiwan for its citizens traveling from three Chinese cities, allowing people from the mainland to travel on from the island for the initial time. The change is an extra step toward normalizing travel arrangements between the two sides which have enjoyed increasingly close business ties over recent years, and follows the launch last week of their initial telephone hotline. It comes days before Taiwan goes to the polls for elections likely to put into power a political party that Beijing distrusts.

  • Far Eastern Air rebuts malfunction claims

TAIWAN AREA, 2012/12/25  Far Eastern Air Transport Corp. (FAT) yesterday rebutted recent claims by a local magazine that FAT deliberately covered up midair engine flameout incidents and has demanded NT$500 million compensation in damages. According to Grant Chang (張濟華), vice president of FAT's Fleet Department under the Flight Operations Division, the article by China Times Magazine (CTM) used the terms “engine shut-off” and “flameout” to mislead the reader. “The two terms have very different meaning,” he said, “Engine shut-off is an intentional operation performed by the aviator under safety procedures; a flameout is an incident when the engine suddenly stops functioning.”
