  • The pilot questioned why the plane leaving from Auckland airport was not taking a more direct route to Kuala Lumpur

    MALAYSIA, 2016/01/06 t was only eight minutes into a Malaysia Airlines flight that took off from a New Zealand airport at the same time as the pilot realised something was wrong. It was heading in the wrong direction. Flight MH132 took off from Auckland airport to Kuala Lumpur on Christmas Day and was going south towards Melbourne, the New Zealand Herald reported. The pilot was curious as to why the plane, which left at 2.23am on Friday, was not taking a additional direct route to the Malaysian capital and contacted air traffic controllers in Auckland to ask why.

    NEW ZEALAND, 2014/02/11 The fate of New Zealand-registered aircraft that crashed on landing at the Honiara International on the Solomon Island airport on Sunday 26th January will be determined based on a final statement by investigators. Director of Civil Aviation George Satu said investigations into the crash is continuing and a final statement should be presented to the minister as any minute at this time as it is finalised. Mr Satu said additional data onto the cause of the crash should be known at the same time as data from the aircrafts black box is returned Monday next week.
  • Air New Zealand cutting 180 jobs

    NEW ZEALAND, 2013/08/24 New Zealand: Air New Zealand is cutting its Auckland maintenance staff because there simply isn't enough work for them, the company says. The airline plans to shed 180 positions from its maintenance facility servicing larger aircraft and wants the workers gone by the middle of next year. A final decision will be made in October. The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) says staff are devastated. Its members were told on Thursday that jobs may go working at a heavy maintenance base which hat services large, wide-body jets.

    NEW ZEALAND, 2013/06/11 Air New Zealand said Thursday it had boosted its stake in Virgin Australia to 23 % and was considering buying additional, but denied any plans to seize control of the discount carrier. The airline said it had purchased an additional three % and informed Australian regulators it wanted to buy an extra three %, which would take its total stake to 26 %.

    NEW ZEALAND, 2012/12/24 Air New Zealand has announced it will ax its Hong Kong-London service with the loss of 70 jobs and introduce a code-share with Cathay Pacific on the Auckland-Hong Kong route. The moves come as the airline attempts to stem losses on its long-haul flights, which contributed to a 12-% fall in profit for the year to June 30. Chief executive Rob Fyfe said a review had found the Hong Kong-London route would not be profitable in the foreseeable next and the airline would cut 70 London-based cabin crew jobs when it halts the service in March next year.
