  • UN envoy calls for credible electoral process in Puntland

    SOMALIA, 2013/12/26 The UN Secretary-General’s Appropriate Representative and chief of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), Mr. Nicholas Kay, on Tuesday renewed his call for a timely and credible political process that should lead to a new Puntland parliament this year and regional presidential elections next month. 'As the election draws closer and political temperatures become additional heated, I call on all candidates and stakeholders, in particular the traditional titled elders, to work jointly and be prepared, at times, to strike difficult compromises,'  in New York quoted Mr. Kay as saying in a statement.

Combined with a rising food and fuel import bill, governments are presently looking for savings. Energy and food subsidies are increasingly being reviewed.

    SOMALIA, 2012/09/11 Somali parliamentarians made history Monday (September 10th) when they elected Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to the country's top post in the first presidential elections held inside Somalia in over two decades. Mohamud defeated former Transitional Federal Government President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed in the second round of voting, 190 to 79.
