Women and children's rights advocate Graca Machel yesterday urged women and youth in Tanzania to be proactive at the same time as it comes to seeking development opportunities.
Ms Machel, the founder of the Graca Machel Trust, said this during the closing of an eight-day conference in the city which was aimed at empowering communities to tackle development challenges.

The G20 Leaders' Summit, which concluded in Hamburg, Germany, on Saturday, has recorded positive outcomes for world development, with significant benefits for the African continent.
The office of South African President Jacob Zuma on Sunday said critical developmental issues were tabled at the summit, which brought together leaders from the world's major economies, inclunding the European Union.

This year’s Africa Finance & Investment Forum (AFIF) (http://APO.af/EjovGX) will focus on “Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Increase” and will be held for the initial time in the vibrant city of Nairobi, Kenya, hosted by the Strathmore University, taking place from 15th -16th February 2017.
In line with growing regional and international trends, this year's edition of AFIF will focus on entrepreneurship and innovation and access to finance in key sectors such as energy, water, ICT, health and agriculture.

Forbes Africa has announced its inventory of nominees for the 2016 Forbes “Person of the Year” Award. The annual prize is awarded to the continent’s most influential business person. This year’s inventory includes two presidents, a top civil servant, a successful businessman, and the citizens of a country. Forbes has invited its readers across the continent to participate in what it describes as “one of the majority momentous and anticipated annual events in Africa.”

oday, the African People commemorate the Africa Human Rights Day across the continent under the theme “Women Rights – Our Collective Responsibility”.
On this occasion, H.E. Dr. Aisha Laraba Abdullahi, Commissioner for Political Affairs issued a statement on behalf of H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission describing this year’s theme as timely and appropriate. Timely in the sense that it coincides with the Declaration of the African Union’s Heads of National and Government of “2016 as the African Year of Human Rights with Particular Focus on the Rights of Women”. It is, therefore, a clarion call on Africa to do additional to promote women’s rights, particularly the rights to development. It is in this context that the African Union Commission has concluded that the AHRD theme for this year is a reflection of a ray of hope that through empowerment of women in Africa, sustainable peace and development will be ushered in.

Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, is earmarked to host the next United Nations Conference on Trade and Improvment(UNCTAD).
The 14th edition of the UNCTAD summit to be held between July 17-22 would take place at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, according to the United Nations data center in Naorobi.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is billed to open the week-long conference. Thousands of delegates inclunding Heads of National and Government, ministers, academic and economic experts, representatives of the private sector and members of nongovernmental organizations are expected to attend.

Barack Obama has chided African leaders who refuse to give up power in his initial speech at the African Union headquarters by a US president.
The scolding came in the course of his address on Tuesday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to the 54-member continental bloc.
"Africa's democratic evolution is as well at risk at the same time as leaders refuse to step aside at the same time as their terms end," Obama said. "No one should be president for life."

Declaring Kenya at a "crossroads" between promise and peril, President Barack Obama on Sunday pressed the country of his father's birth to root out corruption, treat women and minorities as equal citizens, and take responsibility for its next.
Closing his historic visit with an address to the Kenyan people, Obama traced the arc of the country's evolution from colonialism to independence, inclunding his own family's history here. Today, Obama said, young Kenyans are no longer constrained by the limited options of his grandfather, a cook for the country's former British rulers, or his father, who left to seek an education in America.

Selected business leaders and policy makers from across Africa converged in Nairobi over the weekend to discuss mega economic trends in Africa. During the forum organised by Strathmore Business School, the business leaders discussed the growing trends in key economic sectors and prospects for the African continent with a view to providing insights for the continent's increase in the next decade.
Part those present were Kenyan Industrialist Manu Chandaria and Keroche Breweries Chief Executive Officer Tabitha Karanja. The participants at the panel discussion were mainly drawn from the School's Alumni and explored recent developments in the ICT and energy sectors, which are projected to change the fortunes of the continent in the wake of increased investment .
