  • UNWTO: International tourism – strongest half-year results since 2010

    AFGHANISTAN, 2017/09/09 Destinations worldwide welcomed 598 million international tourists in the initial six months of 2017, some 36 million additional than in the same period of 2016. At 6%, increase was well above the trend of recent years, making the current January-June period the strongest half-year since 2010. Visitor numbers reported by destinations around the world reflect strong request for international travel in the initial half of 2017, according to the new UNWTO World Tourism Barometer.     INDIA, 2017/05/29 India wants to get a larger slice of the growing wedding tourism cake, but this will need better efforts, both at domestic and international levels. Destinations and venues are plentiful, but connecting the dots and bringing the a lot of service providers together is significant, said Suman Billa, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism in New Delhi, while opening the two-day Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Wedding Tourism Summit on May 25.     MALDIVES, 2015/08/30 Maldives Tourism said it was hoping to double visitor numbers from the Middle East, with a focus on GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) travellers as the country works to its goal of attracting a total of 1.5 million guests by 2016. Ebrahim Asim, director of Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation, said that the country was looking to attract additional visitors from emerging markets such as the GCC, South America, and Eastern Europe next seeing a dip in Western European travellers on the back of a depreciating euro. Europe has long been Maldives’ biggest source market, though the fall in euro has seen a shift in trends, making China the country’s biggest guest market recently.
