  • UNWTO: International tourism – strongest half-year results since 2010

    AFGHANISTAN, 2017/09/09 Destinations worldwide welcomed 598 million international tourists in the initial six months of 2017, some 36 million additional than in the same period of 2016. At 6%, increase was well above the trend of recent years, making the current January-June period the strongest half-year since 2010. Visitor numbers reported by destinations around the world reflect strong request for international travel in the initial half of 2017, according to the new UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Worldwide, international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) increased by 6% compared to the same six-month period last year, well above the sustained and consistent trend of 4% or higher increase since 2010. This represents the strongest half-year in seven years.

  • Dubai set for leaner tourism season

The fall in the price of oil is being seen as a key factor in weakening request, with the Russian market one of the hardest hit. The continued weakness of a lot of eurozone nations has as well affected Dubai’s arrival figures, though it is expected some of this may be offset by increases from developing markets, such as China.
  • Dubai could attract at least two additional cruise companies

    UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, 2014/03/24 Dubai could attract at least two additional cruise companies within the next five years, according to Hamad Bin Mejren, executive director of business tourism at Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM). The tourism authority is in talks with a number of cruise companies, such as US-based Carnival Corporation and PLC, which has Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Aida Cruises and Costa Cruises, for instance, in its portfolio. “The success of companies here will attract other companies,” Bin Mejren said.
  • Ukrainian travel agency representatives met in Dubai

    UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, 2013/12/16 Ukrainian travel agency representatives met in Dubai on Sunday for the second annual ‘Congress of Natalie Tours’ to discuss cooperation plans for the UAE, a key market for the travel operators. The event, held at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, was as well attended by Saleh Al Geziry, Director of Overseas Promotions at Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), and Ghassan Aridi, Chief Executive Officer at Alpha Tours. Ukraine, which has a people of 45 million but just one million annual outbound travelers, represents a significant opportunity for international destinations like the UAE, Vladimir Vorobiev, President of Ukrainian travel company Natalie Tours, said at a press conference next the congress.
  • Abu Dhabi being positioned as new watersport destination

    UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, 2013/08/24 Abu Dhabi is being positioned as a new international watersport destination by UK travel trade industry leaders who said the emirate was attracting the world spotlight. Abu Dhabi will once again host the Volvo Ocean Race from mid-December 2014 to January 3, 2015, the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA) said in a statement on Thursday.
  • Luxury Shangri-La Dubai tenth anniversary

    UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, 2013/07/20 Dubai’s Shangri-La hotel is offering guests the luck to book a night in the five-star hotel for AED10 ($2.72) as part of celebrations to mark the hotel’s tenth anniversary. The promotional rate will be offered to the initial ten guests who reserve a room to remain on July 10. The offer will be available on the hotel’s official website from July 8 at 9am and can be availed by entering the appropriate rate code SLDB10ANN. The initiative is part of the hotel’s celebrations to mark its tenth anniversary in Dubai.
  • Western bathing suits banned on tourist beaches

    UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, 2013/04/27  United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities have banned women's bikinis and tight bathing suits for men on public beaches, UAE daily The National reported on Tuesday. Large seaside billboards have sprung up recently near Western tourist hotels, reminding everyone to ''respect public morals and dress modestly'' or incur a fine.
  • Dubai Airport Passenger Traffic set to reach 66 million in 2013

    UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, 2012/12/31 Dubai International Airport, world’s fourth busiest hub for international passengers racked up an extra month of double digit increase this November. Dubai Airports in its monthly traffic statement said that the passenger traffic is estimate to reach 66 million in 2013. The november monthly traffic reached 4,875,003, up 10 % over 4,431,673 in the corresponding month in 2011.
