A strong signal of growing business engagement with Africa by large U.S. corporations was the announcement last September by Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman of plans to invest over $1 billion in Africa over the next five years. Caterpillar is not a new-comer, having begun doing business on the continent in 1926. At last month's U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Washington, DC, David Picard, Caterpillar's regional manager for Africa and the Middle East, described some of the steps that have been taken since last year's announcement. He as well talked about the challenges and opportunities he sees, inclunding Nigeria, where the company has operated since 1948. He was interviewed by AllAfrica's Noluthando Crockett-Ntonga and Ladi Olorunyomi from Premium Times in Nigeria. The interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Chief Executive Officer of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, is in Kenya on the second leg of his historic visit to Africa. He started his ‘African mission’ in Nigeria on August 30.
In Kenya, Zuckerberg said he was looking forward to learn about mobile money, ‘‘where Kenya is the world leader,’‘ his post on Facebook read. As he did in Nigeria, he will meet with entrepreneurs and developers in the east African country.
‘‘I’m starting at a place called iHub, where entrepreneurs can build and prototype their ideas,’‘ he stated.

Nigeria and Angola remain two of Jaguar Land Rover’s major markets in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the company’s director of operations for the region, Nigel Clarke. This is despite both economies feeling the result of the drop in oil prices over the last year. Angola gets roughly two-thirds of its revenue from oil.
The luxury car manufacturer, with its sub-Saharan headquarters in Pretoria, exports the bulk of its vehicles to eight markets in the region – Angola, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. However, over the next two years Jaguar Land Rover will focus on growing its business in six smaller markets – Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville, Malawi, Mozambique – through local country partners.
“Due to the expansion of our office in Pretoria and the fact a lot of of our processes and systems are presently in place, which has taken a long time, we are much additional ‘fitter’ to take on these markets.”

Julian Kyula is a celebrated Kenyan entrepreneur. The 40-year-old is founder and CEO of technology company Mobile Decisioning (MODE) that offers a wide array of micro-credit solutions of up to US$100, enabling additional than 350 million mobile phone subscribers to access cash and airtime via mobile money. Users can as well fasten credit to settle utility bills, which MODE due pays to the utility provider on behalf of the mobile subscriber.
Founded five years ago, the company today has operations in 26 nations globally and is in the process of launching in eight new markets.
The motivation to start the business was to “bring people to financial inclusion”.
MODE has been recognised internationally for its innovation, while Kyula has received numerous awards inclunding the 2012 IBM World Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Speaking to How we made it in Africa, he shared his personal journey in entrepreneurship.

Kenya Airways, the East African country's national carrier, ran into severe chief winds last week reporting a record loss. The finance minister presently says the airline may need a half a billion dollar bailout.
Kenya Airways said its pre-tax loss had grown from 4.86 billion Kenyan shillings ($48 million) to 29.71 billion shillings ($293 million) in the ending in March 2015.
Last week the airline announced it had chosen the African Export-Import Bank in Cairo to advise it on raising capital and arranging a $200 million bridging loan.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, is in Kenya for the launch of Windows 10.
Mr. Nadella announced his visit to Kenya through his twitter handle @satyanadella, "Arrived in Kenya to celebrate @Windows 10 launch with fans & learn how tech is #empowering Kenyan people & orgs yesterday."
Nadella as well posted a picture on Tuesday from the Nanyuki Airfield, in Laikipia County of Kenya. Nairobi is one of 13 cities where Microsoft is holding appropriate launch events on Wednesday. Nanyuki a town where Microsoft has pioneered its Mawingu project, a project that seeks to use TV whitespaces technology to provide internet for residents in Laikipia county, though the project is still on its piloting stages.

September has ended for Fastjet with a record breaking number of 57.756 passengers carried and a load factor of 74 % - up nearly 80 % compared to the same month a year ago.
Punctuality, compared to August, reduced slightly to 88 % of all departures leaving within 15 minutes of the published times.
All eyes are presently on the performance of the newly launched route to Uganda, were flights were at the end of September doubled from two to four a week, to establish how well the Ugandan and Tanzanian markets have taken up the nonstop flights between Dar es Salaam and Entebbe. As well in October will the airline increase flights from Dar es Salaam to Kilimanjaro.

Kenya Airways (KQ) yesterday formally notified travel agents, booked passengers and the public at large that they will withdraw from the Eldoret route and that flights, come April 1, will be operated low cost subsidiary Jambojet.
This is the initial confirmation of its kind, following weeks of speculation at the same time as aviation pundits predicted that the entry of Jambojet into the domestic Kenyan aviation market will reshuffle the deck of cards and lead to Kenya Airways “making space” on the routes Jambojet will fly to, namely Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret.
Beginning April 1, Jambojet will fly five times a day between Nairobi and Mombasa and there, too, is a capacity reduction by Kenya Airways on the drawing board, though it still has to be formally confirmed how a lot of frequencies KQ will yield to its subsidiary, the same applying to Kisumu too.

KENYAN-based data and communications technology executive, Chris Wood, has again been named as one of the 100 most powerful people in the world telecommunications industry.
In the sixth annual World Telecoms Business Power 100 listing, Chris Wood climbed 14 places in the rankings to 65. The chief executive officer of Nairobi-based WIOCC is one of only four executives from African businesses to appear in this GTB magazine-compiled inventory, which identifies the 100 most powerful people in the industry.

Kenya Airways’ performance during the second quarter of the year was ever so slightly down from a year ago, largely centred around a 7.8 % capacity reduction on routes to Europe, where for instance the daylight flights to London were halted until request justifies their re-introduction.
North African destinations saw a decline in capacity by nearly 28 %, mainly as a result of the turmoil in Egypt which depressed request and led to a suspension of services until the political situation has stabilized again.
The introduction of a third daily flight to Juba helped to cushion that capacity decline as South Sudan is geographically bundled with the airline’s North African destinations, a remnant from the days of the united Sudan, something which however is any minute at this time to change should South Sudan remain on course to join the East African Community.
