Agriculture in Paraguay

  • Paraguayan beef returns to some international markets

PARAGUAY, 2012/12/22 Paraguay’s beef industry is showing signs of recovery following a recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. After exports fell by 48% in January compared with the same month in 2011, the country is expected to end the year as the world’s ninth-major exporter of red meat. Currently, the landlocked country is 19th. This position in the rankings reflects recent improvements but is still lower than Paraguay’s ranking in 2010, when it was ranked seventh and accounted for 3% of world beef consumption, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). But Paraguay lost its title as a “country free of foot-and-mouth disease, with a vaccination program,” from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) after the disease was confirmed in the department of San Pedro in September 2011.
