I pose the question after I saw a conference brochure doing the rounds promoting Middle East Com, in which the organisers have kindly provided a table of mobile subscribers for the Middle East by country for the period 2007 - 2012. This shows the number of mobile subscribers in Saudi Arabia as standing at 43.7 million at the end of 2012. This is down from a peak of 45.11 million at the end of 2011.

    SAUDI ARABIA, 2012/12/23 International investors are setting their sights on the Middle East’s young but booming e-commerce industry, and particularly on the promising opportunity in the Saudi market. Paypal announced the launch of its Middle East operations on Nov. 14, and three of the Middle East’s major online retailers - Namshi, Souq.com and MarkaVIP — have amount raised rounds of funding this year for major expansion. Namshi, a UAE-based online retailer focusing on fashion and footwear, has secured 20 million dollars from JP Morgan Chase and Blakeney Management; Marka VIP, the Middle East’s major flash sales site focusing on luxury goods, raised 10 million from multiple international venture capital firms; and Souq.com, the region’s major online retailer with a customer base of 8 million, secured $45 million end of last month from Naspers, a South African media company, and Tiger World, a New York hedge fund.
  • Aramco says August cyber attack targeted all Saudi economy

    SAUDI ARABIA, 2012/12/12 Oil giant Saudi Aramco said on Sunday that an August cyber attack on its computer network targeted not just the company but the kingdom's economy as a whole. The interior ministry, which joined Aramco's investigation into the attack that affected some 30,000 of the firm's computers, said it was carried out by organised hackers from several different foreign countries. "The attack targeted the whole economy of the country, not just Aramco as an entity," said Abdullah al-Saadan, who headed the company's inquiry team.
