The Ministries of Ghana and South Africa announce the combination of 'initial light' science observations which confirm the successful conversion of the Ghana communications antenna from a redundant telecoms instrument into a functioning Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) radio telescope.
Ghana is the initial partner country of the African Very Large Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) Network (AVN) to complete the conversion of a communications antenna into a functioning radio telescope. The 32-metre converted telecommunications antenna at the Ghana Intelsat Satellite Earth Station at Kutunse will be integrated into the African VLBI Network (AVN) in preparation for the second phase construction of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) across the African continent.

The number of mobile phone subscribers in the world has reached five billion, according to the research arm of the world mobile industry organization, GSMA. But sub-Sahara Africa is the least penetrated with 436 million incomparable subscribers, the organization says in a press release copied to ghanabusinessnews.com.
The GSMA defines a ‘incomparable mobile subscriber’ as an individual person that can account for multiple ‘mobile connections’, that is SIM cards.
According to GSMA Intelligence, the world’s five billion incomparable mobile subscribers today account for approximately 7.7 billion mobile connections – excluding mobile-to-mobile (M2M).

From medical applications to inventions aimed at enabling the continent’s educational system, the continent is not just experiencing a digital revolution, but it’s as well solidifying its place as world leader in science and technology.
The number of young people creating life-changing digital applications in Africa continues to grow. In Mozambique, counselors are using Short Message Services to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS, while in Nigeria a Do It Yourself generator that can produce six hours of power just from a liter of urine was invented by a group of 15-year-old girls. And in Zimbabwe, a 24-year-old engineering student has managed approaching up with a machine that turns plastic into diesel.

"Mean spirited", "inhumane" and desecrating the spirit of the Refugee Convention are some of the milder criticisms levelled at Denmark's harsh new asylum laws, passed last week.
Part new measures is a decision to strip new arrivals of any cash and valuables worth additional than 10,000 kroner (US$1,450), purportedly to pay for their upkeep. Switzerland and some southern German states have introduced similar policies.
It's a move that reflects the fragmenting world of European migration policy, lacking in solidarity, empathy and basic human decency. But what of the financial implications for asylum seekers?

African telecoms company Eaton Towers has raised a $350m war chest to fund expansion across the continent.
Eaton, which builds and operates masts for mobile phone networks, has as well signed a transaction with Mobinil in Egypt, an arm of Orange, to buy 2,000 towers.
The company installs telecom networks and persuades rival mobile phone operators to share the same tower, thereby cutting costs.
Chief executive Terry Rhodes said: "Sharing masts is good for everybody."

A recent directive, by the National Communication Authority (NCA) to telecommunication companies to charge GHp4 per minute, will kill businesses and affect over 10 million subscribers, Vodafone Ghana has warned.
The company believes the current move by the NCA would have a negative impact on the telecom industry, since the directive could disarm their ability to monetise GH¢80 million annual capital investment .
Vodafone Ghana expressed the concern over the "On-net price regulation" by the NCA at a media round table discussion held in Accra last week Thursday.

Gondwana International Networks’ (GIN) AfricaOnline business has unveiled a managed infrastructure and services solution in Ghana. The new SME product offering, iManage, has been done in conjunction with managed services company, SevenC Computing.
Winston Smith, General Manager, Terrestrial Services for GIN and AfricaOnline says that the partnership with SevenC Computing has by presently proven beneficial in several nations: “We have seen great success in Namibia, Zimbabwe and Uganda and expect tremendous increase in Ghana. There is great request for level three managed services support in Africa, as cloud simply cannot deliver on its own.”

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has revealed that the mobile voice subscriber base has increased from 29.37 million at the end of July to 29.53 million as at the end of August 2014.
According to reports, MTN had an increase of 110,042 from July to end the month of August with 13.54 million. Whereas Airtel’s subscriber base increased by 97,016 to end August with a total figure of 3.76 million, according to the NCA.
