The number of mobile phone subscribers in the world has reached five billion, according to the research arm of the world mobile industry organization, GSMA. But sub-Sahara Africa is the least penetrated with 436 million incomparable subscribers, the organization says in a press release copied to ghanabusinessnews.com.
The GSMA defines a ‘incomparable mobile subscriber’ as an individual person that can account for multiple ‘mobile connections’, that is SIM cards.
According to GSMA Intelligence, the world’s five billion incomparable mobile subscribers today account for approximately 7.7 billion mobile connections – excluding mobile-to-mobile (M2M).

In Mozambique, counselors are using Short Message Services to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS, while in Nigeria a Do It Yourself generator that can produce six hours of power just from a liter of urine was invented by a group of 15-year-old girls. And in Zimbabwe, a 24-year-old engineering student has managed approaching up with a machine that turns plastic into diesel.

"Mean spirited", "inhumane" and desecrating the spirit of the Refugee Convention are some of the milder criticisms levelled at Denmark's harsh new asylum laws, passed last week.
Part new measures is a decision to strip new arrivals of any cash and valuables worth additional than 10,000 kroner (US$1,450), purportedly to pay for their upkeep. Switzerland and some southern German states have introduced similar policies.

Ethiopia has signed a $700 million agreement with China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd to expand the country’s mobile phone infrastructure and introduce high-speed 4G broadband network in the capital Addis Ababa and 3G service throughout the country.
The agreement is half of a $1.6 billion project split between Huawei and ZTE, China’s second-major telecoms equipment maker. Huawei, the world’s second major telecom equipment maker, has been involved in developing phone and internet services in Ethiopia for several years.
Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Communications and technology, who welcomed the transaction, said that the original target had been to reach 40 million subscribers, but presently inclunding the w3G service, there would be 56 million subscribers by 2015.

Ericsson has provided the network infrastructure and services to bring voice and data communications to the Millennium Village Project (MVP) in Koraro located in a remote part of northern Ethiopia. With access to 3G connectivity more than 4,000 students and their teachers at two schools involved in the Connect To Learn initiative will now have access to modern learning and teaching resources through Ericsson's cloud-computing solution.

Ethiopia is of the few remaining African nations to introduce mobile banking. With the booming economy and a people of 80 million this country could be the next gold mine for mobile banking companies.
Mobile banking has proved to be a lucrative venture in the developing world, where large parts of the people belong to the so-called “unbanked.” In Africa, only Ethiopia and Zimbabwe do not provide mobile money services. That will change any minute at this time for Ethiopia.

As people the world over go online, the majority of users' primary means of Internet access will be their mobile phones. This is according to the new “Traffic and Market Statement” by Ericsson, which looks at the mobile landscape for the next five years.
Ericsson's chief of strategic marketing and intelligence, Patrick Cerwall, says: “The Internet is going mobile. Mobile PC and tablet subscriptions will, by 2017, be on the same level as fixed broadband subscriptions.”
