  • Philippines, China restore direct talks to discuss security, trade issues

    CHINA, 2017/04/07 The Philippines and China have re-established direct talks for the initial time in six years to discuss security and trade issues, the Philippines' top diplomat said Tuesday. Philippine Acting Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo said the biggest fruit of President Rodrigo Duterte's visit to Beijing in October last year was the re-opening of the lines that pave the way for direct consultations between the two nations. "I think one of the benefits that have arisen from the president's visit last October is that we have restored various mechanisms to talk to China, not only on trade but as well on political and security issues," Manalo told a forum in Manila.

    JAPAN, 2016/01/28 Japan's emperor said Tuesday that his country must remember the tremendous loss of life in the Philippines during World War II, as he and his wife embarked for a four-day visit to the Southeast Asian country. "A lot of Filipinos, Americans and Japanese lost their lives in the Philippines during the war," Emperor Akihito said in a short statement he read before departing from Tokyo. "Particularly in the battle in Manila, a tremendously large number of innocent Filipino civilians were victims. Upon making this visit, we need to bear this in mind at all times."

The thought to further explore the cooperation was highlighted in a high level forum discussing next relations of AEC and China in production capacity cooperation held here on Friday, attended by senior figures and stakeholders of the two economies.
  • Export value up 20% in Aug

    PHILIPPINES, 2013/10/11  Merchandise export earnings rose by a fifth in August from a year ago, posting its fastest increase for the year due to the positive performance of seven major commodities, the National Statistics Office (NSO) said. The NSO said yesterday the country’s exports earnings reached $4.581 billion in August, a 20.2-% increase from the $3.810 billion recorded in the same month in 2012. However, for the January to August period, total merchandise exports registered a 0.8 % decrease to $35.003 billion from the $35.297 billion in the same period last year. Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. president Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr. said in a telephone interview yesterday that while accumulation exports for the eight-month period are still down, the group is upbeat the country’s exports performance would improve in the coming months.
