    LIBERIA, 2017/08/23 The soccer icon has shown he is better prepared in these elections than most people expected, accoding to political consultant, Robin Lee Tarpeh. Tarpeh says Weah has been able to "plan properly and raise [additional] resources for his campaign". Presently that campaigning for the 2017 elections have finally open, there is a need for us, the pundits, to assess the race and provide our perspectives as to where things stand. Without going any further let me clarify that these elections will produce no "dark horses"; the winners are known candidates.

    BOTSWANA, 2017/08/20 While the continent’s major economies were hit by the fall in commodity prices in 2016, Africa retained its position as the second-fastest growing continent globally recording an average of 2.2% GDP increase, behind only South Asia, according to the African Development Bank Group (AfDB). Much of Africa’s increase in 2016, AfDB says, was driven by East Africa where several nations recorded “strong performances.” In general, of the continent’s sub-regions, East Africa posted the highest increase rate with 5.3%, led by Ethiopia.

    BOTSWANA, 2017/08/15 The US will probably maintain its current levels of aid to Africa despite President Donald Trump’s proposals to slash funding, according to Bill Gates, the world’s richest man. Trump said in May his government would no longer allocate funding for family planning, a move that has the potential to undermine aid programs in the poorest nations in the world. However, with Congress in control of the budget, it’s unlikely that all cuts proposed by the Trump government will go ahead next year, Gates said in an interview in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial capital.

  • Liberian Security Forces Train for Upcoming Elections

    LIBERIA, 2017/08/11 Ahead of the October 10 2017 general elections, security personnel are participating in a series of training sessions in electoral security with support of the multi-donor basket fund in cooperation with the Liberia National Police and the National Elections Commission. The training which is sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme, European Union, Ireland, Sweden and Canada was meant to boost the capacity of the National Elections Commissions so that peaceful elections are held. Security is a key component in credible elections and police officers are taking part in a number of modules that will increase their considerate of best practice electoral policing, assist police manage the demands of Election Day policing and enhance considerate of electoral procedures in ranks.

  • WHO lauds Africa’s progress in malaria, HIV control

    BOTSWANA, 2017/07/29 The World Health Organisation (WHO), has commended the African region for making significant evolution in malaria control in the last five years. Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, said malaria incidence and mortality rates had declined by 42 % and 66 % respectively between 2000 and 2015. Moeti made the commendation in Kigali, Rwanda, while speaking at the Initial Africa Health Forum, launched by WHO, Africa and the Government of Rwanda.
