Between 2010 and 2030 the population of Poland will be both ageing and declining. After a brief resurgence in the 2010s total population will fall to 37.4 million in 2030 - a decline of 2.3% from its 1997 peak. The median age will first reach 40 years in 2017. The proportion of foreign citizens is very low but emigration particularly to other EU countries has been a major driver of population change in recent years.
