Peru: Desalination plant at Cerro Lindo is good model

2010/08/10

The desalination plant at Peruvian miner Milpo's Cerro Lindo polymetallic mine in Ica region is a good model for next mining operations in the country's arid coastal region, chief of corporate affairs Francisco Ismodes.
The construction of the plant helped to avoid conflicts over water with nearby communities and local farmers, Ismodes said.
Initially, Milpo was planning to use water from nearby streams at Cerro Lindo. "But we realized that the neighboring communities were not pleased with us using their water, particularly because there were farmers downstream," Ismodes said. "We reacted quickly at the same time as we saw that this was going to be a problem for our project and we came up with the idea [to use seawater]."
Technical evaluations showed it was feasible to build the plant and transport seawater 60km inland for Cerro Lindo, chief of environmental affairs Erica Huanca told BNamericas.
"We considered everything that technology could provide at that time and the strongest [alternative] was the use of a desalination plant to obtain water, which is a very scarce resource nowadays and even additional so on the Peruvian coast," Huanca said.
The major obstacle to using seawater for mining operations is the distance of a project from the ocean, Ismodes said. "It won't always be possible to use seawater, but it's a good alternative because on the coast there is by presently a lack of water for agriculture."
In addition to Cerro Lindo, Milpo mines at Chapi and El Porvenir, and has a controlling stake in Minera Atacocha, amount in Peru. The company - which produces copper, gold, silver, zinc and lead - as well has the Ivan copper mine in Chile's region II.
