North Korea: Mobile Internet for foreigners to be allowed in North Korea

2013/02/24

North Korea is to allow mobile Internet for some foreigners. The government has decided to allow foreign residents in Pyongyang to tweet, Skype and surf the Internet from their cellphones, iPads and other mobile devices.

In a relaxation of Telecom rules, the government has said a mobile Internet service, to be offered by national provider Koryolink, will be operating in a little while. Koryolink is a joint venture between Korea Post Telecommunications and Egypt's Orascom Telecom Media.
It is expected the entity will enable users to link to a 3G, mobile Internet service no later than March 1st. Only weeks ago, North Korea began allowing foreigners to use cellphones with Koryolink SIM cards.Up until again, visitors would be required to leave their phones with customs officers. North Korea, long regarded as one of the majority isolated nations in the world, will still withold wireless Internet from its own citizens. North Koreans are only allowed to use a separate set of telecommunication tools, which excludes the world Internet. Generally speaking, North Koreans are only equipped for broadband Internet.
But mobile phone use has multiplied in North Korea with additional than a million people presently using devices in major cities.
