Japan People Profile 2012

The Japanese are largely Mongoloid ethnic group, but we know very little about their origin. Successive groups of Asians migrating from the mainland to settle in the islands around 300 AD The first known inhabitants of the islands are the Ainu, a people probably of Caucasian origin. The Japanese have developed from the mixture of these different ethnic groups. Only a few hundred full-blooded Ainu remain, on Hokkaido.
Population
population density of Japan is 870 people per square mile (337 per km 2) approximately 11 times greater than that of the United States. The density of the plain inhabited areas far exceeds the national average, while mountainous areas are fairly sparsely populated.
Since the Second World War, Japan became one of the most urbanized countries in the world.
