E-commerce has grown dramatically in France. French consumers are spending rapidly increasing amounts on goods purchased via the Internet, ensuring that France has of the fastest-growing online retail sectors in Europe. While some deceleration seems inevitable, sector performance will still be strong going forward to 2014.

The online retail sector had total revenue of $28.7 billion in 2009, representing increase of 32.8 % since 2005. The electronics segment was the sector’s most lucrative in 2009, with total revenue of $7.3 billion

The increase of the French online retail sector has continued to be incredibly strong even in these current gloomy economic times. Consumer debt, interest rates, inflation, home prices and job security amount affect customers’ spending decisions, and the current economic climate indicates a slowdown in consumer spending. However, this trend is less apparent with respect to online retailing, as customers turn to online shops in search for the best deals for their money. This makes the sector attractive to new companies, whilst alleviating rivalry to an extent. E-commerce is unlikely to quite replace traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ retail, however it continues to grow in popularity and is becoming additional and additional convenient.
