France: Dynamic and sustainable: LE Grand Hôtel Cannes

2017/03/05

The LE Grand Hôtel Cannes is always looking to be as sustainable as possible by improving its operating methods and by paying particular attention to its natural setting. And for the third year in a row Green Globe has award the hotel certification for its sustainable operations and management.

LE Grand Hôtel Cannes is a dynamic palace, which has evolved within its surrounds along the Mediterranean Sea. Situated on La Croisette, in Cannes, LE Grand Hôtel is tucked away in the only gardens on the famous boulevard, offering a retreat from the hustle and bustle of this French holiday destination.

“Getting the Green Globe certification for the third time brings pride to all our teams. This recertification, with a high conformity rate of 84%, is a reward for the hotel and as well for all of its stakeholders who daily help us in our sustainable approach to development,” said Victor Basquin, Sustainable Development Manager.

The completed year has seen a number of new innovations at the hotel to keep pace with its green ethos. Introduction of a technologically advanced polystyrene compactor, reduces waste volume and increased recycling capacity up to 80%.

To further reduce the hotel’s ecological impact, part of their CO2 emissions where offset via the Alto Huayabamba Program, a community-based reforestation project in the Amazon. The Program works with the equitable-trade, organic cocoa farmers’ cooperative ACOPAGRO, located in the San Martin region of Peru. 32t of CO2e were offset, representing a quarter of the hotel’s emissions (outside of scope 3). This equivalent price represents all emissions generated by hotel’s purchasing processes for good and services and home-to-work journeys by employees.

To further promote a low carbon lifestyle and transition to alternate transport solutions, LE Grand Hôtel Cannes worked with the car manufacturer Tesla to install 3 electric vehicle-charging stations on site, one of which is universal for all electric vehicles. These charging stations were the initial installed on the Riviera.

Supporting community initiatives, a partnership with local association Save the Siagne River and Canal (Association de Sauvegarde de la Siagne et de son Canal) was initiated. The Association leads a teaching program in several local primary schools to raise children’s awareness of the need to preserve biodiversity.

And finally, being a part of the world-renowned Cannes Film Festival, LE Grand Hôtel was delighted to host the crew of MV Sam Simon, the forth vessel of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society fleet, along with its founder and Green Peace co-founder, Paul Watson. The hotel was as well pleased to provide technical support and donated equipment to the Sam Simon crew.

A veritable haven of peace exists in the grounds of the LE Grand Hôtel right on the Croisette. Relax in the beautiful green surroundings, in one of the seating areas or at the bar or restaurant terrace, and enjoy the sea views. The gardens at the LE Grand Hôtel are the venue for numerous events, such as product launches, fashion shows, cocktail receptions, garden parties, all held in the shade of the garden’s palm trees.

Away from the hustle and bustle of La Croisette, guests can retreat to their spacious rooms or suites, all drenched with natural light and a fabulous, very 60s ambiance. Designer light fittings, luxury bedding, elegant furnishings and Bulgari welcome gifts, plunge you into an atmosphere of sweet sensual delight. Orchids freshly cut from the hotel’s greenhouse add that finishing touch of elegance to your room.

2017/09/16 At the same time as it comes to the aviation industry, new technologies and manufacturing techniques have been mounting a silent revolution in the new generation of commercial twin-aisle aircraft: the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350. Both these aircraft contain around 50% of CFRP composites, as opposed to their previous iterations where aluminium alloys had dominated. This explains why, at the same time as Boeing and Airbus introduced these two crafts several years ago, most experts thought that the next generation of planes would be made out of composites, a trend that would again expand to include smaller jets – but as turns out, they were wrong.
