Uzbekistan seeks to ensure full self-sufficiency in sugar

2014/10/13 Angren Shakar LLC has completed the construction of a sugar plant in the Tashkent province of Uzbekistan, the company representative told Trend. The cost of the project stood at $108.45 million. A trial batch of products has by presently been produced at the plant and the act of the working committee has been signed. "It is expected to sign the act of the national commission in coming days. The plant will start working at the designed capacity (1,000 metric tons of sugar per day) by late 2014," the source said.

Uzbekistan and Spain have signed a memorandum of cooperation

2014/04/22 Uzbekistan and Spain have signed a memorandum of cooperation program between the foreign ministries of the two nations for 2014-2016. The document was unedrsigned by Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Jose Manuel Garcia-Margalit, who paid an official visit to Tashkent, and Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov on April 21. The document primarily envisages holding of the regular political consultations between Uzbekistan and Spain. During the talks the sides exchanged views on a whole range of bilateral relations, inclunding on issues of international and regional security, inclunding the situation in Afghanistan.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov signed the Agreement on Free Trade Zone

2014/01/06 Uzbek President Islam Karimov signed a law "On ratification of the Protocol on the application of the Agreement on Free Trade Zone, dated Oct. 18, 2011 between its parties and the Republic of Uzbekistan." The protocol was signed in May 2013 at the conference of the Council of CIS heads of governments in Minsk. The document defines the legal frameworks of relations between Uzbekistan and the agreement participants. The protocol has been worked out for better involvement of Uzbekistan in cooperation within the CIS, inclunding the unification of trade regimes of member states of the Customs Union with Uzbekistan. The Protocol envisages exemption from import duties in the process of implementation of trade operations between the nations of the Customs Union and Uzbekistan. Provisions of the treaty apply in relations between the contracting parties and Uzbekistan by taking into account a number of conditions.

Largest music festival of the East being held in Uzbekistan

2013/08/26 The major music festival of the East “Sharq Taronalari” is being held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on August 25-30. Sixty nations attending the event. On the eve of 22nd anniversary of Independence of Uzbekistan, the country is holding its ninth traditional international music festival, “Sharq taronalari,” in Samarkand held under the patronage of UNESCO. Currently, 60 nations inclunding Latvia, Burkina Faso, Russia, Japan, Turkey, Austria, Georgia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Great Britain, China, France, Madagascar, the United States, Thailand, Czech Republic, South Korea, Spain, Estonia, Egypt, and others have confirmed their participation, and media from 15 nations are covering the event.
