Indonesia: Indonesia to boost financial inclusion through national strategy

Indonesia is ready to boost financial inclusion through the implementation of a national strategy, a minister said recently following a conference with Dutch Queen Maxima, who is visiting Indonesia in her capacity as the UN secretary-general's appropriate advocate for financial inclusion.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said the government would any minute at this time have a national strategy for financial inclusion, which would be signed by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and would assign a council to oversee daily issues pertaining to the matter.

"The major point is, on one side we will continue to improve financial inclusion alignment, but on the other hand, Indonesia is an example of a developing country that is promoting the issue and contributing to the experience of policies that are implemented in advancing financial inclusion," Retno told reporters on Tuesday evening following her conference with Queen Maxima.

As an example, Retno said the government was committed to developing the implementation of micro credit programs (KUR), citing Jokowi's call to suppress interest rates in the context of KUR. She as well pointed to the government's savings campaign, which was implemented in 2010 and has created 2 million accounts for low-gain individuals.

The minister as well noted Indonesia's role in financial inclusion as evidenced by the country's commitment conveyed in New York by Indonesian Ambassador to the UN Dian Triansyah Djani through his active promotion.
